It's a problem that occasionally happens with iPhones and is most likely to occur soon after a firmware update.

A possible solution is to:

Try hard reboot your iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Volume Down button at the same time for at least 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Then you can check your messages again.
If the issue still exists, go to Settings > iMessage to turn it off. Turn it on a few minutes later to see whether the messages you need will appear.

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
