I am currently in he USA and want to change my SIM to a T-Mobile SIM for the month that I am here. My phone is on a plan back home in Australia. How do I unlock the phone from Telstra for 1 month?

If it's on a postpaid plan then your handset is not network locked. You should just be able to put another SIM in your phone.
Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
