You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

Answered

I have just returned from an overseas trip where I did not use my  telstra sim card. On my return I popped my sim into my phone, typed in the unlock code and then tried to connect to the internet using safari. I then received the message "You are not subscribed to a cellular data service"

I have made sure cellular data is on, and that the APN says telstra.iph, and I have tried the good old switch-off-switch-on. But I still get the same message.

Can anyone help me out?

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

switch on switch off does nothing but put your phone to sleep, a hard restart might put it right, press and hold power and home together until the Apple logo shows and the phone restarts

before doing that you might want to try resetting the network settings to reload the carrier bundle, to do that go to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings

also there have been some updates to the carrier bundle, if you go to Settings/General/About it should prompt you if you don't have the current version 11.2

Lastly I take it you didn't have data disabled on your account from Telstra's end while overseas, if you did this disables it locally as well and you'd need to call up to get it activated again

If there isn't a profile or device option in Settings > General, then there isn't a profile instaled

Try going to Settings > General > About and seeing if there is a carrier update available

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

The carrier you used overseas may have automatically installed a Carrier Profile onto your phone. Look under settings-->general-->profiles. If there is anything there other from the other carrier delete it.

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

resetting the network settings would drop this in favor of the default settings but no harm in having a look anyway

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

Not installed profiles. These can include VPNs and other settings that will last after a reset.

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

VPN is switched on or off though and wouldn't stop data working assuming it was a valid VPN

I travel a lot and use local SIM's, I also use VPN's as some of the countries I visit block access to certain sites, one carrier I use requires the use of a custom profile to set the APN and I've never had an issue with it remaining after resetting network settings to reload the default profile for my Telstra SIM when I get back home

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

FIXED

I had already tried resetting the network settings, so it wasn't that.

I checked profiles and there was an Onavio profile installed, but that was installed prior, so it wasn't that.

I had also updated the carrier settings when prompted, but to no avail.

So I did the reset (power + home) and it looks to have done the trick. Dont know why I didn't try that sooner.

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

You legend! After 3 phone calls and some really frustrating and repetitive trouble-shooting with Telstra's L2 tech support, this quick suggestion from you sorted out my problem. Now why can't the tech guys know this stuff? I even told them that i recently travelled to the US and used a local sim card. Thanks!!!!

Worked for me. Thanks. Hopefully I can work out how to turn that profile back on again when I need it next time.

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

WOW, the start/home screen reset solved the exact same issue described here.  Telstra was UNABLE to resolve despite telling them EXACTLY the error I was facing.

Thanks a million; and TELSTRA TECH SUPPORT, please get your act together. You need to start reading these forums and learning from the users, as you are clearly clueless.

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

Had a similar problem with a phone bought where living overseas. Had an active prepaid Telstra sim with sms and voice working but no data: "You are not subscribed to a cellular data service" . Data plan was charged up ok.

Removing the overseas carrier profile worked, thanks for your tip xarento. iOS9 iPhone 6s, settings > general > profile and delete the profile. Profile from OCN, a Japan provider in my case. Just remember how to reinstall the profile if you are traveling back!

Telstra tech support no real help to me either..

Xarento,

Many thanks for posting your reply.  You have saved me from buying a new phone, at least.

I have also tried to spread your message to my help desk and others.

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

Ahh yes thanks that fixed it! I removed the U-mobile profile (Japanese mobile carrier), turned my phone on and off and data works now Smiley Happy

Weird that it didn't work with the profile as I had installed the U-mobile profile before i left Australia and data still worked on Telstra in Australia. Maybe the profile only gets activated when you insert that carrier's SIM?

Thankyou xarento, this is the only thing that worked for me. Resetting network settings did not remove the added profile.

Thank you so much for this information. Upon my return from overseas I had this issue. Went to the local Telstra store and they couldn't figure out the issue. Tried this and now my phone is back to normal

After several calls to Telstra support, this fixed by problem immediately! I changed to a Vodfone SIM whilst in the UK and couldnt get incoming calls or 4G data on my return.

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

I’m having the same problem...I just came back from China and I used a travel SIM card over there and when I got home I put my normal Telstra SIM in and it’s saying I’m “not subscribed to a mobile data service.” I’ve tried turning my phone on and off, I checked my profiles, I deleted my VPN, and reset network settings, and it’s still not working...help

Re: You are not subscribed to a cellular data service

@Jess28

Just to double check with you, you've definitely checked in "Settings > General > Profile" (this might also be Settings > General > Device Management)

If you don't have a profile installed, the setting for Profile'Device Management will not be present in your settings.

Yes, I have only got the 2 profiles that were on my phone previously and have never been a problem.

Are these able to be removed for testing?

Assuming you can re-add them at a later time if needed

If there is a profile you can generally find it in settings > general and it is below the VPN section. It is only there if there is a profile installed

Try going to settings > general > about and see whether there is a carrier update available

Thanks for the suggestion about removing the profile. I had one from telefonica, and after removing it, mobile data now works.
