Can the Telstra 4G Sierra Wireless USB dongle still be used in 2020?

Hi all,

I am wondering if the Telstra 4G Sierra Wireless USB dongle can still be used?

I would like to use it if I can if I need extra data for a while.

I believe I used it on a bigpond plan quite a few years back now.

I'd love to hear some solutions as to how to go about using it, on a bring your own device mobile internet plan.

Cheers Smiley Happy

Hi @escort,

You can use the dongle if the plan is still active within Telstra's system.

Are you still paying for a service plan for this dongle?

No, the plan ended years ago! Can't remember how long!

Hi @escort,

Not sure if it will still work though.

Have you tried inserting a SIM card to it?

Is it a bigpond wireless broadband?

When I used it, I had a bigpond account, yes. One of the last of its kind I gather before the shift to Telstra Mobile Broadband. It has always had a sim, yes, never removed it. So I have a sim and the device. Thats why I am asking how to go about using it now.

Hi @escort,

Telstra has decommissioned the BigPond Wireless service long time ago.

I think you can still use the dongle by inserting an active Telstra SIM.

But not really sure though if that would work.

One would bloody hope so (working with an active sim).

After all it is a branded Telstra device. Denial of use would be the insurgence of blasphemy.

"Insurgence of Blasphemy" - no idea what on earth that actually means. Is that where you walk in to a church mouthing profanities about their particular deity?

The problem with the old Bigpond devices was with the login to the service. They were pretty much tied to the Bigpond system (which hasn't existed for about 4 years now). The interface to the older devices also doesn't work with Windows 10, so that could be another issue that you face.

It might end up being easier to get a new Telstra dongle (which has the advantage that it uses the 700MHz band as well) for $39.

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
