Is there a Security number that Telstra have to provide to customers to have access to the internet to pay their bill? Or is this a scam

I've been paying my bill to Telstra via the internet for several years, and I have never heard of a security number.
On the basis of what you have written, it probably is a scam/

50 + years exp. in radio comms., eg mobile phones since 1963, two-way radios, base stations, antennas & pagers. Expert in current Telstra Go repeaters & smart antennas.

It sounds like a scam. Who is asking you for a security number (which doesn't exist)?

When speaking w Telstra directly, to ID myself I've been asked to confirm a security pin / number sent to my mobile device. This is for Telstra to confirm that I am who I say I am.
I don't know if this is your situation, but it's been happening to me when speaking with various Telstra Call Centres for the past 6m or so.
