New phone same sim from old "bat phone" then Telsta Data immediately messages $100 data used

Just purchased a Pixel 3a. Went to Telstra Shop where shop person swapped the sim card from my old "batphone," I put the new phone in my pocket, made no attempt to use it or to download any apps. Nothing! Then within ten minutes or so a message comes allegedly from TelstaData saying I have used $100 of data and any further data would be charged. Has the new phone been hacked or is Telstra serious? What data? My phone is independent of my internet usage.
