100mbps plan modem syncs at 35mbps

Hi,

I've recently had NBN FTTN installed at my home, I initially opted for the 25mbps plan however I had this increased to 100mbps once I was switched to VDSL. The person I spoke to gave me around 1 to 2 hours until the speed was changed over (job 1-865121352393).

Around 1 hour later I watched my modem lose line/internet connectivity then resync moments later, I checked my modem GUI and my line speed had changed from 27mbps down to 35mbps down, which leads me to believe the transfer was conducted properly. I called up again to confirm this had been done and was told to wait 24 hours as it can sometimes take this long (surely if my plan wasn't boosted I'd still be locked to 25mbps and syncing at 35 would  be impossible?).

I waited 24 hours with no change, called Telstra NBN team and they ran a few tests, advised me to factory reset my modem with nil change to sync speed - modem is syncing anywhere from 35 to 37mbps. I was informed that there may be some maintenance going on at the exchange as NBN has only recently been activated in my area and to give it some time, I would normally expect this answer if it was a speed issue, as in if I was synced at 80mbps and only getting 40mbps throughput - but I am synced at 35 and getting around 33-34mbps from Cairns - Brisbane Telstra speedtest.net server.

My question is, is it normal practice for a port to be limited sync speed in order to stop congestion? If not, is 35mbps all I am able to achieve on FTTN service - I've read if you're within 400m from node 80mbps or so should be more than achievable on VDSL technology.

Thanks in advance.

Re: 100mbps plan modem syncs at 35mbps

Ahh the joys of inferior MTM technology

Your sync speed is limited by distance to node by cable length including bridge taps, and the quality of the copper. There is then also the potential for the node to be congested either by not enough CVC purchased, or hard limits due to lack of foresight by NBNco (E.g in it's current form, if just over 80 people are are connected to the same node and are using the internet simultaneously, regardless of anything else, everyone will only achieve 25mpbs down hard limited).

You are also correct that at that distance cable length it can be 80 or even more

Post you modem stats so we can take a look (10.0.0.138 > advanced > broadband)

Re: 100mbps plan modem syncs at 35mbps

Hi,  thanks for the reply.

Yeah I figured as much, I was syncing at 16mbps or so on ADSL prior to switchover which isn't too bad. It either appears as you said, lack of foresight on part of NBNco or my node is barely much closer to my house than the exchange. I've got a node behind my house in a park and one about 400m or so from my street, my area is a bit of a rabbit warren so copper could go anywhere.

Re: 100mbps plan modem syncs at 35mbps

Hmm very roughly your downstream attenuation suggests somewhere around the 700-800m mark cable length which would put your speeds basically bang on what you would expect at that distance

Yeah I had a look at the attenuation just earlier before - makes sense I guess.

I guess I'll just come to terms with the speed then, thanks for the response.

FTTN FTW!

Re: 100mbps plan modem syncs at 35mbps

It might also be worth looking at going for the 'Very Fast' 50/20 speedpack instead of the 'Super Fast' 100/40, as it is $10 less per month. Since you aren't even getting the 50Mbps anyway.

Instead of paying $10 more a month for something you are getting no benefit for.

Just a suggestion Smiley Happy

I was thinking the same myself, no point paying the extra for something that isn't being delivered.
