apparently my Telstra Gateway Max ( netgear C6300BD) is NBN ready. but where is the phone jack?

The Cable Gateway Max is not NBN Ready, though it would probably still work on FTTC if the WAN port is enabled in the modems config. You would not be able to get a phone service though as it indeed does not have phone ports

The DSL Gateway Max is NBN Ready for all technology types
They quite often get confused because they were named the same

Thanks for info.  just to confirm, is the "DSL Gateway Max " the "Telstra Smart Modem" as per Telstra NBN website?

No the Gateway Max is about 2 generations older. Model Number TG799
