Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

G'day crowdsupport, i'm just wondering if someone could assist me in diagnosing/reading some traceroutes and whatnot due to my awful ping situation.

This one dated 21/01/2021

These are teamspeak connections by the way, to a server in Brisbane. I am on the Gold Coast.

The reason I have so many 1's in my username is because of the amount of times I dropped out and reconnected as a duplicate user. Yes, that's how many times I dropped out, and I have near 60% Packet Loss and 918 ping at 1o'clock in the morning, it's ridiculous.

A bit of background to my problem-

I'm on ADSL2+, and before all of this garbage, I actually had really great pings and great speeds, especially since the line for the house was brand new, since the house was a new build.

Am I being throttled for some reason? It's been happening for easily 1.5 Years now but it's especially ramped up in the past couple of months and it's starting to become totally unacceptable. I can understand slower speeds in peak hour (Which during previous calls to Telstra, this was wiped off as being peak hour)- but this is ridiculous. My family has a home business and we need to be able to make zoom calls, I personally need a better connection not only for the business but because I'm in a long distance relationship, and many of my friends live in other cities now and talking and playing over the internet is how we connect.

If I could please get some pointers with the traceroutes ect it would be super appreciated.

Thanks guys, and cheers. Hope you have a great day

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

Even though your phone line is new there is probably an intermittent fault on your ADSL link. The diagnostics page of your modem would give an indication of any faults (Advanced > Diagnostics > xDSL)

With an intermittent fault the traceroutes printouts are not much help. To get a better indication suggest you install ping plotter and do a test.

I will be sure to get some PingPlotter screenshots when I experience my next bout of lag.

This is what was in xDSL

Okay, so I just got a ""mild"" bout of lag and this is what PingPlotter reads.

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

The DSL Diagnostics indicate there is no problem with the ADSL link. You always get FEC errors and a few CRC and ES errors.

The ping plot indicates their could be a fault in the network on  hop 6. Really need a plot over a longer time period

Sure thing, i'll try and get one tonight.

I got this, if it's necessary to see more then 10 minutes then I will get the trial for PingPlotter pro, but I hope this will be enough.

There was no packet loss but it looks like the high ping is due to the ADSL link as the high ping starts on the second hop which is the ADSL link.

Got another one this morning

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

It looks like the ADSL link is causing both the packet loss and the high ping.

When analyzing a ping plot and there is packet loss or high ping showing on several hops of the approximately the same amount it is the first hop that has the packet loss/high ping that is the hop causing the packet loss and high ping.

It could be that your ADSL link is getting overloaded by some device on your network trying to download or upload data. ADSL links don't provide much bandwidth especially in the upload direction which on most ADSL links is under 1 Mbps. Your connection info also most of the packet loss is Out which I assume is upload direction.

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

I've performed lots of isolation tests, and even when no-one else is home and there's minimal devices on the network it still has this issue. I'll continue investigating in case I have missed something on my home network.

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

Hi mate,

Thanks for the help to attempt to resolve the problem, friend of the poster helping to diagnose here, unfamiliar with Telstra's network setup and their routers for the most part but I've ruled it down to upload traffic causing latency, I suspect it may be bufferbloat? or an issue with how its throttled on the router? He's on a 20/12 mbps connection with a solid 1600meters give or take a few to the nearest exchange

Any way to throttle locally to 60/70% upload speed locally for him?

got him to upload a test file to check, no other devices active on network, Windows 10 for the pc's OS.
latency and loss spiked right up as soon as the upload speed ramped up.

Any thoughts on how to go for him from here?

@calel

On a DSL connection the internet speed is normally 10% less than the DSL sync speed.

Was the device connected by ethernet or WiFi?

Is the speed reduced by 30 - 40% on all devices?

Could you post a ping plot test while uploading a file?

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

A couple of tests while uploading to Google drive. The first one was from around mid day, and I know it's not really not enough time for a test, it was just used as a quick check with @calel -

Second one was just now.

And yes, the speed is reduced on all devices.

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

Were you uploading data on both tests

On the first plot the high packet loss on the third and fourth hop indicates there might be fault in the exchange.

The second plot looks normal apart  Here the results from my link.

The average ping on my plot is lower mostly due the ping on the second hop being lower (11.2 my FTTN link compared to 49.4 your ADSL link).

The 100% packet loss on hops 17 to 31 is normal.

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

Hello again cf4, I hope you had a great weekend. Thankyou so much for your assistance, too.

Yes I believe I was uploading on both tests.

We have had lots of problems with our local exchange in the past, including corroded connections, so I think it is not out of the realm of possibility that it could be that.

Is there any other tests I should be doing?

Thankyou

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

I can't think of any other tests you could do. Your ADSL link is probably Interleaved to improve performance. Interleaving reduces the number of CRC errors but also reduces the speed slightly and increases the latency by up to 50 milliseconds. You could request interleaving be removed but I don't know if Telstra will remove interleaving. You can't check if link is interleaved by going to Advanced > Broadband.

Re: Bad Packet loss and Ping at most hours of the day.

I checked, my connection is interleaved.

I will keep it as an option, but I might see if I can get them to check the exchange too

Thankyou so much for your help, it's massive for me.
