cable broaband frequently dropping out

Answered

Hi,

My cable broadband has become unusable over the last week. It was perfecty fine for months prior to that. Now, sometimes it will connect for about 1 minute and then disconnect again. Sometimes it will stay connected for a few hours, sometimes it wont connect for hours on end. Switching off wi-fi (and using a single ethernet connection) hasn't helped. I moved the router away from other devices in the house which seemed to help for a day or so, but then it started dropping out again.

I went through the troubleshooting service but that failed to identify the problem. I tried phoning support and opted for the "call me back" option. The automated system kept phoning me, putting me on hold for a few minutes and then telling me there was a problem and that they would try again in 5 minutes.

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

Problem resolved this morning. It was a corroded tap (maybe because the drain next to it sometimes floods). The nice Telstra man gave me his number incase it happens again.

I also had better luck getting hold of support (133933) in the morning, I guess most people phone in the evening.

It's good to understand the signal strength numbers, I'll check these if I have trouble in future, or when/if I move house.

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

Doing a quick Google suggests the upstream power (57dBmV) may be too high..

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

Yes. 57dBmv is out of spec for bigpond cable. Probably a corroded TAP in the pit. It could certainly be the cause of the dropouts

Also locking 1 downstream channel could be either indicative of a fault or an outage. Is there anything listed for your suburb via servicestatus.telstra.com? . The 6300, depending on what model Cable Headend/CMTS is in use, should either be locking 8,9 or 16 channels

doulbechecking the CMTS Mac Address 00:01:5c:7e:fa:63, it should be one of the new Arris CMTS which should be giving you 16 downstream channels

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

Thanks Yastiandrie, I forgot to mention there are no outages reported in my area.

It looks like I have no choice but to try calling 13 22 00 again. I went to livechat.telstra.com but it only wants to chat if you don't select faults.

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

The not very helpful results from the troubleshooter:

  • We couldn't check your account usage
  • We couldn't check your account details
  • There are no outages in your area
  • We couldn’t check your line connectivity
  • We couldn’t check your line quality

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

The trouble shooter is somewhat amusing..

q: What is the status of your Internet light at the moment?

a: Flashing Green

q: Does your internet connection drop out?

a: My online light is flahing during dropouts.

q: Is your connection stable now?

- Yes, the modem's Online light is solid green and the connection is stable.
- No, the Online light is off and I can't connect.

I'm asked twice to confirm the light is flashing green.. and then at the next question (the isolation test) I have to confirm that either everything is now magically working, or the light is now off?!! I just told you it's flashing green! It's still flashing green!

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

Is there no other way to get this fixed other than to call 13 3933 and a) sit on hold for an unspecified length of time or b) put up with the call back / hang up / call back cycle... in the hope that presumably at some unknown point in time a human being will both a) answer the phone and b) know what to do?

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

telstra.com/fix ?

the troubleshooter is generically worded and there may be multiple troubleshooting paths that lead to that step, so the wording doesn't always quite match up.  just choose the online light is off option. As soon as you get to the end of it and it gives you a reference number, call 133933 and say Fault Cable to the robot lady and that should get you onto Cable Tech Support

Re: cable broaband frequently dropping out

Thanks, got hold of Telstra this morning. They will call back later and arrange a service engineer if it continues to drop out.

Interesting to note that when it is working all the downstream channels are connected, but still only one upstream channel (at 57 dBmV):
