Connections to East Coast North America are routing through Asia and Europe

A recent data centre move for Mechwarrior Online has highlight an issue with the route that Telstra connections take when connecting to the East Coast of North America, specifically Montreal.

For some reason connections from Australia are routing via Hong Kong and through Italy and France in order to connect to the US mainland. Often times the route will go via Asia to Europe, then to North America, back to Europe and finally back to North America.

Spreadsheet with Trace Routes

I've uploaded a spreadsheet to dropbox at the link above with four examples of the traceroute from my machine to the target address mwomercs.com. This isn't an isolated issue, there are two threads on the mechwarrior online forums discussing the issue

http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/169478-new-data-center-greater-latency-performance-to-many-our-non-...

and

http://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/170129-any-other-australian-players-forced-into-retirement/

This new route has seen ping times increase by at least 40ms and by as much as 100. When ping times from Australia to Canada are already averaging 260ms, any increase is seriously detrimental to the play experience.

It would be wonderful if this could be looked into further as it has been mentioned by the devs in this post that it isn't limited to mechwarrior online and may be impacting other games/services.

Re: Connections to East Coast North America are routing through Asia and Europe

Hi SirLankyIII

The information that is provided in your spreadsheet is not showing the sort of results that we would expect to see in a trace route. Typically we would expect the ping time to increase as shown in the examples which can be found here: http://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/General-Internet-KB/International-routing-latency-and-ping/ta-...

It is worth noting that some of the locations noted beside the hops are incorrect and it is possible that others may be as well. I am not sure where you found that information, but if you used a IP location finder, please be aware that they are not always accurate.

Regardless, I have passed this information along to a colleague who works within the networking team to take a further look into this.

I will be sure to pass along any updates that I receive.

Hi Shelly,

Thanks for the reply. Here's a more recent traceroute in a more standard format (The previous one was a visual traceroute app, this one is directly from my router). If the locations the software is giving are wrong then that's fine, at least then it's ruled out.

Re: Connections to East Coast North America are routing through Asia and Europe

I believe that this issue is now resolved.

Can you test it now?

Re: Connections to East Coast North America are routing through Asia and Europe

I am having the same issue which is still not resolved and has only been happening for the last 3 or 4 weeks.

I tested trace route on several canadian servers only mwomerc.com is affected it seems.

mwomerc.com > routed via Italy then North America

www.cirrushosting.com > routed to North America (Not Routed via Italy)

www.bluefur.com >  routed to North America (Not Routed via Italy)

The issue only seems to only affect Australian gamers who use telstra, but not iinet or internode customers.

I have been very happy with my 4g prepaid connection so far, (about a year) untill this issue appeared.

I basically only use this (Expensive) connection to play this game at mwomercs.com, if the issue cannot be resolved I will have no other chioce but to change ISP's. Which I wish to avoid.

Please help.

I used http://www.ip-tracker.org to detemine router locations.

(I have a support ticket, but I'd thought I would let people know that the issue is not resolved for everyone.

I can't be sure where the Telstra Global servers from this Trace route are located, but I have updated the ones that I know are incorrect.
