NBN 2.4GHz Congestion..noone seems to be able to help!

I "upgraded" to NBN in Feb from ADSL2+ and have had constant issues ever since. I was originally an iinet customer and have only recently moved to Telstra to try and fix the problem but it hasn't.

My issue is that majority of the time (not just peak) my 2.4ghz connection has severe lag spikes. I stream alot and play ps4 online which is why I probably notice it more then others. Some of my devices can only connect to the 2.4ghz which is a shame as the 5ghz is really reliable. When I run the WIFI analyser it shows a tonne of 2.4ghz connections in my area and changing channels doesn't help. I have removed all devices from the router and used only laptop..ran speedtests and ping spikes are crazy. I really don't know what to do. Looking for help!

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: NBN 2.4GHz Congestion..noone seems to be able to help!

Short answer is that there's not really anything you can do without taking some real extreme/wild and expensive measures (E.g turning the house into a giant faraday cage)

WiFi is a radio signal, and the 2.4 ghz band is potentially subject to all sorts of interference both inside, neighbours, and environmental.

WiFi signal quality is something that no service provider would make any guarantee's on

Bluetooth can cause interference with 2.4GHz band. You could try turning bluetooth of on all your device.

Thanks Yastiandrie. Is there a reason why my ADSL2+ service when I was connected to a rim was really amazing and consistent? Ping rarely dropped under 15ms. Now that I am on NBN it ping spikes regularly?

Re: NBN 2.4GHz Congestion..noone seems to be able to help!

@HarveyFresh hard to say without being able to investigate your connection specifically (which i wont be able to do regardless)

If you're on FTTN the same line issues that can potentially affect ADSL connections are amplified so it could be at play. Or is could be something like peak time CVC congestion

Post your modem stats so we can have a look:
On a Telstra Gateway, you can find them via http://10.0.0.138/ or http://192.168.0.1/ > Advanced > Broadband or Advanced > Gateway Settings > Device Info > General > xDSL (At the bottom of the General page). You're looking for line rates, power levels, attenuation etc

Other suggestions is to run everything you can on ethernet (Even power over ethernet)

And maybe a quality WiFi repeater might help?

(Unless of course it is a fixed wireless NBN connection that is the cause, not sure what your on)

It is a FTTN service. The devices that I really need to be lag free or ping spike free is my PlayStation 4 and my other devices that can only connect wirelessly.

I thought playstation 4's have ethernet? Which 'ethernet over power' might help if you can't run a cable to the modem.

Those stats look fine

which model modem is it? did it have additional stats on that page about things like CRC, FEC, errored seconds, etc?

Ultimately you may need to get NBN Assurance to take a look as well to see if there is anything out of the oprdinary connection wise

Re: NBN 2.4GHz Congestion..noone seems to be able to help!

it is a Gateway Max 2. Literally got it last Friday when Telstra connected me. Had no other stats on the page besides output power.  When I spoke to iinet NBN support a few months and I had to do about 12 tests. They confirmed I had congestion and they said they have requested further capacity. The internet was literally sweet for 3 months or so after that. Then it got bad again which led me to move to Telstra. I almost feel that it is worse now then it ever has been. Massive regret leaving ADSL2+

Go to Advanced > Diagnostics > xDSL. Should find the other stats there

If you are getting the issue during peak times (3PM-12AM) it can be a capacity problem. NBN assurance would be able to tell you if your CVC is slated for an upgrade and when

Re: NBN 2.4GHz Congestion..noone seems to be able to help!

I will check the advanced stats when I get home tonight and post them. How do I get hold of NBN assurance without having to place endless calls through to Telstra. Is there a quicker way?>

They should be available via livechat as of a couple of weeks ago but i'm not certain if livechat is 24x7

Other then that 1800 834 273 is your only other option
