NBN and telstra smart modem setup in brand new house

I have just built and moved in to a brand new house that has been wired for NBN. The NBN technician has come out and set up our connection box in the garage, does this mean I have to plug my Telstra Smart Modem into the connection box directly in the garage? Or Can I plug it into one of the sockets in the house as it has been wired for NBN?

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Which type of NBN do you have?

Thanks

Re: NBN and telstra smart modem setup in brand new house

When they house was wired for NBN, were any cables run to the location in the garage where the NBN connection box is situated?

Re: NBN and telstra smart modem setup in brand new house

You will need to plug the Telstra modem (or any router) between the NBN connection box (NTD) and the patch panel that connects to the sockets throughout the rest of the house. Depending on how many sockets you have, you may need a network switch as well (the Telstra modem has 4 LAN ports, so if you have more sockets than that, you will need a switch).

As far as Wifi coverage goes, if the Telstra modem is in the garage, you may need a wifi router located elsewhere in the house to give you full coverage as the walls of the garage may block some of the signal and the garage is normally off in a corner.

If you are planning on using the home phone, then the socket that the phone is going to be plugged in to is going to need to be connected to the phone socket on the modem via the patch panel.
