Hi,
I have just connected to the NBN.
The Telstra/NBN installer refused to reconnect my Netgear Modem Router D6200 even though he was asked to do so. He instead connected the Telstra provided one which I stated several times that I did not want.
I want to reinstall my Netgear equipment. How do I reconnect the Netgear D6200 given there is no phone port on the Netgear (unlike the Telstra one) and I can't connect my phone directly to the Voice ports on the connection box?
I have a home phone now that I am paying for and is useless.
Thanks,
GMP

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
Your Netgear should be connected to the NBN connection box by plugging the ethernet port that comes from the NBN Connection Box to the WAN port on your Netgear. The Netgear acts as a router, not as a modem in an NBN installation.
You phone plugs directly in to the port on your NBN Connection Box.
The Telstra Technician is only authorised to install the Telstra Gateway. He is not allowed to install 3rd Party hardware and the installation from teh Tesltra side can only be completed once the Gateway is connected to the NBN. This is the point where the technician has provided you with the service you have ordered. If you choose to change the setup after he leaves, that is your choice.

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
You're not missing anything. This whole process is just confusing IMO. I believe that there are phone ports on the NBN box (2 on the leftward side??). You may have to lift the front cover off the box to see them. But plugging my phone into either one does not work. I may not be doing it correctly though.
Jupiter,
I've tried plugging my phone directly into the NBN connection box and it does not work. If there is a certain place other than the voice ports (there are 2) then can someone please advise?
I was of the understanding after reading some posts on here that I needed to use the TGateway to be able to use my phone but no one from Telstra told us this before the day this technician turned up. It would have been nice to know this beforehand when we were making the decision on what provider to go for.

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
Hi GMP,
Whilst I don't have the exact information at this stage I will be forwarding this to our NBN specialist who will be in tomorrow morning who can investigate.

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
Hi GMP
I had the same problem
You have to use both modems, connect it like the Telstra tech did but disable the WiFi so you get your phone working then from one of the yellow LAN ports on the Telstra modem plug that into your new Netgear modem and use that for your internet. This is how I have got my home phone and internet working but I am using a D-Link router.
Hope this helps

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
Hi Ben_Telstra
I have the Netgear D6200 and I want to connect it to the NBN, I do not care about the phone line (I won't use it) which I understand I need to use the Gateway Max to have it, but I only want to use the internet service
I have tried to copy the configuration from the Gateway Max and replicate it into my netgear without success, Could you please explain the configuration I need to apply to the netgear
When I connect netgear and run the wizard it says that no DSL deteected
When I connect netgear and run the wizard, it says that no DSL detected. I also notice the internet led on the netgear router keeps blinking, never gets steady
I would like to avoid using the Gateway Max as modem and netgear as router
Cheers
Gus

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
Hi Comangus,
An NBN connection will not send a DSL signal, so the modem will never detect that. The modem is no longer needed to provide authentication and so it will only be used to provide a Wireless signal and routing functions. If you've made any modifications to it please reset it to it's factory default settings and then...
Connect your Netgear D6200 directly to your active Uni-D port and you should have a connection. Make sure the Ethernet cable is connected to the 'Internet or WAN' port but not any of the yellow LAN / Ethernet ports.
Hope this helps
Ben

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
I have had a lot of trouble since connecting to the NBN. The gateway router is the issue. Previously (when we were on adsl2) my computer kept telling me to plug the ethernet cable in. It was already pluged in. I had to remove it and plug it in half a dozen times before it would connect. I then purchased a netgear router and the problem went away. Then a bright spark told me i had to connect to the NBN because the copper wire was being removed. So i did. Testra put their gateway router in and the problem came back. the computer, when i boots up has a red cross in the network icon, just like before ADSL2. So i go down to see if i can again buy a new router and was told no, you have to use the telstra one. I would have thought thats against some restraint of trade law or something. So i now have to spend 15 minutes everytime i turn on my computer, unplugging and plugging in my ethernet cable till the red cross disappears and i get connected. I also have to reboot my router every couple of days to get a connection. Telstra tech says this is normal. Cant wait until my contract is up. BTW, they connected Foxtel up when they put in the NBN but instead of going through the NBN (which i was told it would) they put a disc on my roof. They are so poor ive given being mad, i just laugh now. Thanks Telstra better than the comedy company.

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
I don't believe that reconnecting the ethernet cable multiple times is normal as I have not heard of a similar issue. I would agree that there seems to be an issue with the network card and the modems that we supply. Have you checked that the network drivers for your computer are up to date as well as using a different port on the modem and/or a different Ethernet cable?
Our NBN customers can use a BYO NBN Ready modem if they choose, except for when the phone service is provisioned via the modem. In this scenario, you would configure the Telstra Gateway to be in Bridged Mode & disable Wi-Fi and connect your BYO router to the provided gateway.
Alternatively, if your phone service is provisioned via the Uni-V port, you will not need the Telstra Gateway to utilise the phone.

Re: Netgear + NBN + Phone
Hi,
Regarding
"you would configure the Telstra Gateway to be in Bridged Mode & disable Wi-Fi and connect your BYO router to the provided gateway. "
If I do the bridged mode, VOIP LED not glowing and no dial tone on the phone.
But internet is fine and here my setup(TG797nV3)
NTD -> Gateway(Bridged) -> Asus(router)
If I try the otherway, outgoing calls are fine, but incoming calls goes straight to Voicemail
NTD -> Asus(router) -> Gateway -> Phone
Could you please help?
