Poor latency at night

Answered

Hi

In the last 2 weeks my latency between 7-10pm has slowly been getting worse

Had no issues (apart from my distance from the node) with Ping over the last year on my FTTN NBN service

I have a smokeping that runs continually and its very clear from the graph when it starts and stops

I usually get about 6ms to Sydney and now its 50+ during those times

I logged a fault tonight and that was a uphill struggle in the snow

Anybody know how I need to log this and get this noticed?

Issue looks like it was fixed yesterday, latency is back to normal at night

Re: Poor latency at night

Hi Shakow,

I know that you are specifically mentioning latency, but have you also noticed if your upload and download speed are reduced during those same time periods?

No doubt you are already aware that the latency can be affected by a number of factors such as:

- The physical distance between hops on the network.

- Using a wireless connection to your router.

- The processing power of your computer and any if any processes are running in the background.

- The configuration of any firewalls or antivirus programs.

- Your internet connection speed (or the utilisation of the bandwidth), either on the your individual service, or in the local exchange (congestion)

- Retransmissions and/or errors within the network, as each hop can increase the latency slightly during conversion and routing processes.

- TCP stack / network protocol engineering

Re: Poor latency at night

Thanks for the reply

I'm aware of the above being a network engineer with almost 20 years experience

I run a smokeping docker that pings google all day and night and draws a graph for me

Its very clear that the ping is stable for 22 hours a day except between 8-10pm

Speed tests down are okay but not full speed, upload is about 1/2 during the above times

I see on the service status page there are a number of issues which one matches when my issue started for my area

Hopefully (according to those dates) it should be resolved soon
