Possible scam SMS messages

I Received a SMS from Telstra stating that my NBN had been on 'mobile broadband' for 14 days and would be cutoff if It wasn't switched back to NBN.

I don't recall the Smart Modem ever registering anything but green which indicates that it is on NBN.

I called the number provided 1800 834 273 and was answered by a electronic person asking the usual questions before getting through to a real person. This lady had a heavy Indian accent, which combined with the 'boiler room' background noise, made it very difficult to communicate..........so I thanked her and hung up.

Afterwards I began to wonder if this was legit..........has anyone had a similar experience?

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Possible scam SMS messages

That number is the correct number for Telstra NBN support and connects to support staff in the Philippines and India.
Is the signal light green on your Telstra Smart Modem. There was a batch of Telstra Smart modems that did not have the backup 4G SIMs provisioned correctly. It could be that the SIM ID in your device does not match the SIM recorded against your account.

Re: Possible scam SMS messages

That is the correct number to call for NBN Accounts/Billing.

I know you get an email if you are using the 3G/4G backup for too long, so I would assume an SMS is also true if your number is registered.

Why you are getting it is another story if you believe you shouldn't be, so it would be worth following up.

Someone else might be able to explain what happens if you get blocked and the process going forward.

Re: Possible scam SMS messages

Thanks for the feedback cf4, the modem has consistently been a bright green. All the green lights are the same bright green. Initially, when the NBN was first installed it looked purple for perhaps one day but has shown green from then on,,,,,,,and I have been very happy with the NBN service.

I am not sure if my phone call did anything to correct the problem but I guess I'll just let things develop and respond if anything happens?????

Re: Possible scam SMS messages

Thanks Ozmoz..........dunno......will wait and see if anything does happen and I guess things are legit but very vague and the response from 'wherever' certainly didn't fill me with confidence.
