Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

Since yesterday, none of the devices connected to our home network (BigPond cable 100Mb) have been able to download content from specific web addresses. Specifically, none of the devices in our house (Macs, PCs, iPhones, iPads) have been able to download anything from the iTunes Store or the App store or the server for updating apple software. TWe can connect to and browse the stores, but not download or see images. Furthermore, youtube videos do not play.  No error message is given; the videos just don't start playing.

I switched our DNS server from Telstra's to Google's (8.8.8.8) and this solved all the Apple connection/download problems immediately. However, it has not fixed youtube at all.

As soon as I switch the DNS server back to Telstra, I can't download from Apple again, so the problem wth Telstra's DNS appears to be more than a short-term glitch. Also, I have no problems on my phone when I connect using 4G and not my home network.

Not being able to play youtube videos (even with Google's DNS servers) is somewhat annoying and I was wondering if Telstra is aware of the problem and working on a fix.  I am definitely not the only person suffering from this. There is a thread about this on the whirlpool forums with lots of people on Telstra cable reporting this issue since yesterday.  Some people say it also affecting Steam and some other websites. It may only affect people who were recently allocated new IP addresses in a paticular range. I live in postcode 2074 and my IP address currenty starts with 121.

Can Telstra please advise if they are working on a fix?

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

I have had exactly the same problem since Thursday. I spent an hour on the phone with Apple and now I'm surprised they had no info in their database to to advise customers. I then spent an hour with BigPond who also seemed to have no knowledge of problem until she spoke with their 'Mac specialist'. This was after re-setting my Netgear cable modem/router. Finally she said she'd been told that it should be fixed in 24-48 hours!

Btw: how do to change the DNS server settings to Google?

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

To change your DNS server on a Mac, go to system preferences, network, then click advanced, then click on the DNS tab then click the plus button below the list of DNS servers and type 8.8.8.8. Click Ok. Then click apply in the bottom right hand corner on the network page.

On an iPhone or IPad, you need to click the little i next to the name of your wifi network in settings, then tap on the DNS row and type the new numbers there.

In theory, you can change the DNS settings directly on your router, but I think you can only do this if you use a static IP address. My router won't let me change the DNS with a dynamic IP.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

After the last hour talking with Telsta's Philipines based help centre I realise they are more in the dark that I.

She was insisting it was browser, router, other local issues - not telstra.

While listening I sort other reference points amongst them this crowd support. I guess Telstra are hoping they we can solve their internal technical problems.

YouTube down - that's a big site down. My workaround is a Vodaphone 4G WiFi Toggle - that works

This issue has been ongoing for over 2 days now. We are getting sick of telstra not acknowledging there is a problem when clearly many are affected. Telstra need to train their support tech staff over the phone, as the user is more knowledgable then their phone script monkeys. We are all getting fobbed off as being our problem, very frustrating!

Youtube wont play videos but advertisements will, steam wont load, google play wont load, facebook pictures as well.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

I use Open DNS in leiu of the default Telstra on some of my machines, but this one is on Telstra and no troubles seen.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS

But somethink funny is going on here.....

A number of Telstra's systems have been experiencing extended outages and not much is being said.  Bigpond 'My Account' had some features such as data useage unavailable all day yesterday.  In another thread the provisioning portal for new cable connections was down with no ETA and new connections couldn't be configured. Other threads mentioned 24/7 for mobile users had problems concurrent with the My Account problem.  Why so many things falling over in the last couple of days??

Mabybe there is some sort of cyber attack going on and Telstra are trying to contain it while keeping things under wraps.

If my post mysteriously disappears, my suspicions are probably correct.   [BLEEP]

Apple is doen, ebay only loads hald the page and facebook is missing some parts too..

Please FIX asap telstra, this is a joke. will use 8.8.8.8 DNS server for now. as a temp fix to be able to download apple updates.

WHAT A JOKE TELSTRA.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

FEB24: telstra came and changed my DNS to google 8.8.8.8 because my business phone was down and we experienced 7 dropouts since 19.02.15. is this problem just in Mackay or all over queensland??? we also had to reconfigure all our devices that connected to the wireless router because they cannot automatically get the DNS.

Hey nq,

I don't have any widespread DNS issues listed at the moment, so this is strange to hear. Are all the devices working now with the google DNS?

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

No everything works now. The Tech changed the router DNS and we got the internet back. Then I reconfigured all wireless devices to static DNS 8.8.8.8 including, macair, ipad, iphone, samsung printer. just wondering how long it needs to be like this???? the droputs have stopped. also had to reconfigure the 2X panasonic walkabout VOIP phones to (google public) primary DNS 8.8.8.8 and aecondary 8.8.4.4. my WIN8.1 PRO PC and laptop are hardwired into NBN broadband router NETGEAR DEV2020. Also the panasonic VOIP is plugged into one of the router data ports.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

that should be YES all devices working now. probably means we are paying for telstra unmetered content now, but not exactly sure what that would be...

You can see the sites we have unmetered here: http://support.telstra.com.au/t5/Manage/BigPond-unmetered-sites/ta-p/398487

If you were to change any back now, would they stop working?

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

Brodie
We will monitor 8.8.8.8 for a week to see if there are any dropouts then switch back....the bigger problem would be why is this happening on a newer much more powerful fibre network. Albeit there might be some congestion due to re-routing because of cyclone Marcia, but surely the network was designed to handle this

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

Hi Guys,

Just found this thread after having seen various random and slow DNS failures on our NBN service over the last few weeks. The gateway was dealing getting  61.9.133.193,61.9.134.49 as it';s DNS servers. They are regularly timing out. I changed it to give clients 8.8.8.8 as DNS server (google) and it's heaps better. The original servers would regularly time out, or be slow, massivley impacting latency and user experience.

Is something wrong with our DNS (I say ours - I work for Telstra)

Having DNS issues also. Cable internet, pc 3057. It's especially bad tonight but have noticed it a bit over the past few weeks. Certain websites just fail to load entirely, fixed by pointing to Google DNS but page loading times are worse.

Hi Dazby, SSgrasshopper & Xenq1,

Are you still experiencing difficulties with these two DNS servers?

 61.9.133.193 & 61.9.134.49

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

i suspected this issue as well, and changed my bigpond cable modem DNS to 8.8.8.8  I still note that the internet drops out every 860 seconds - i have had a ping & time command running for the last 4 days and its quite regular.

This is almost as annoying as the daily calls from telstras phillippino call centre 'is your problem fixed?"  No.  "well this is just a courtesy call to let you know we are working on it"

I'm having the same issue. Happens every couple of minutes, refresh pages about 10 times until they can load up.

Manually changed my DNS to 8.8.8.8 as others on here and works much better.

Had ad I known NBN/Telstra would be like this I would not have bothered.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

Same issue for me, been happening for months, worse in the evening and affects some sites more than others.  Finally got to speak to someone at Telstra that didn't tell me it was my fault.  They changed my DNS to google and problem gone.  Unfortunately my Telstra modem won't allow you to change the DNS so I have to manually update every device.  Come on Telstra this has been going on far to long, you need to fix this before we all find another provider.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

I have been having problems with the Telstra NBN for a while now, it would appear the DNS servers are still not working, but it seems to be only some websites.  We also get a drop out on a regular basis.  The call centre are usless and don't seem to know what is going on.  I have changed the DNS to google (8.8.8.8) as everyone else has done, but cannot update it in the router, so I have to change it in every device.

It would be nice it they would just acknowledged the problem at least instead of blaming everything but the DNS servers.

I am not in a contract, so I very very tempted to just jump ship to iinet.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

hello,

i have telstra cable and in the last week or so noticed that a big numbver of sites cannot be reached - some of them load after some time but some simply do not load.

this has become an extremely frustrating issue! i have seen that changing the DNS gives you better performance, but i am not sure where i need to do this. on the modem itself, or my router?

if anyone can help i would greatly appreciate it. though i am wondering if this is an issue Telstra is actually working on?

thank you.

Depending on what router you have, it may not allow you to change your DNS settings. In which case you'll need to change it at device level. ie: network settings

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

hello,

i have an ASUS RT-AC66U - it is quite configurable so i assume i can make DNS changes. my only fear is what will this effect with all devices connected to it?

i have set up my own basic home network, inc. a QNAP and a range of wireless devices - but i am not completely sure what changing the DNS will do.

thanks.

Re: Problems with Telstra's DNS servers and other issues since yesterday - especially youtube

Me too, I have DNS request time out. Telstra technical support is hopeless.

I changed 2 different gateways and issues are still the same. Very slow and dropping although speed test looked fine.

If I don't have contract, I would have switched to IINET
