server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
Hi, I've had to have my laptop rebuilt and Windows 10 reloaded, and when I have added my Bigpond email server settings I am not getting all my historical emails down from the server?.
I am only receiving new incoming emails. All my old folders have gone and all my historical emails gone.
I have set incoming as imap.telstra.com Port 993 SSL/TLS
And Outgoing as smtp.telstra.com Port 465 SSL/TLS
Is there anything I can do, or are they all gone?
thank you.
Was this helpful?
- Yes it was, thank you
- No, I still need help
Thank you for your feedback

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
Is that the same case if you log into Telstra Webmail?.
If so, it’s possible that you previously had a POP setup ((on the laptop) which could have deleted emails from the server after downloading.
By the way, which email client app were you previously using on the laptop, and which are you using now?.

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
Hi there,
I had Geeks2u help me and they logged on to Telstra Webmail (ive never known how to do that ) and same thing only the recent emails
Previously when I purchased this laptop (2.5yrs ago) and set up the email they all just downloaded from the server
It may have been POP settings I can't recall. Ive been using Telstra bigpond email address for over 20yrs. Always been with Telstra (the devil you know rather than change)

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
I did ask which email client app you were previously using on the laptop, and which are you using now?.
Were Geeks2u in a position to backup your emails before reloading Windows 10?.

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
Hi Dowser
thank you for your patience with me
I didn’t understand the meaning of “client app”
I’m guessing the answer is “Outlook” is the app/program I use for my emails
NO. Geeks2u didn’t backup my emails before a full reboot. As I assumed that they were “safe” on the Telstra bigpond server since they have always downloaded in the past when I have started a new computer. ????
I apologise - I’m not very computer literate so appreciate your kind assistance

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
Outlook stores its contents in a PST or OST fille.
There is a slim possibility that your old file still exists because a reload of Windows 10 can keep the user files,
Did Geeks2u do a clean Windows 10 installation, say on a new hard drive?.

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
Hmmm thank you.
my laptop was partitioned by manufacturer
and the C drive was what was reformatted.
The D drive wasn’t affected
? How do I look for the files you have mentioned - in Explorer ?

There is a Microsoft support page that explains how to look.
According to that page, your location would be C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
but you might have to turn on hidden folders and extensions (as explained) to see it.

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
I can see that in your most recent post you appear to have found a PST file on the D drive.
What size is it, and when was it last modified?.
- do this by right-clicking and look at Properties from within File Explorer.

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
It appears to be small (so possibly not a lot of content).
Please look for PST files on the C drive as per my previous post.
By the way, what was the reason provided by Geeks2u for reloading Windows 10?.

Re: server settings to get full download of email history after laptop rebuild
Ok. I’ll keep looking
The reason for the re-load was because I stupidly deleted some program operating files thinking they were duplicates as my C drive was almost full and I couldn’t get things to work properly. My C drive is only 118GB but the D drive is 931GB
Apparently when I backup my Apple iPhone the iTunes will only work on C drive and the backup is a big file causing the space issue.

Yes, based on the location, that looks like it is your working PST file.
Have you only found one PST file on the D drive?. You can look in the whole PC using File Explorer. Click on This PC at the top, and enter *.pst in the search bar at the top-right.
Assuming it's the only one you find, you can import its contents into Outlook using the instructions under the section titled "How to Restore a Backup In Microsoft Outlook" at the page
If any emails are imported, they will be uploaded to the Telstra server when Outlook synchronises.
(For in future, you can use the section titled "How to Take a Backup In Microsoft Outlook" to create backups.)
