Slow FTTN would 4G mobile broadband be a better option?

You don't say what speed plan you are on, but what you quote is not right regardless.

Has it always been like that?

Have you re-booted your modem?

Re 4G mobile broadband .....I have been using it for almost 5 years with great success. If you're a massive downloader, which I doubt with the speed you quote .... mobile broadband has smaller limits, but for $65.00 per month they are offering 180GB per month as a special for the 1st 12 months.

Speed wise, with a Netgear Nighthawk M2 modem I get with 1 bar of 4G signal between 200 and 300 mb/s, usually low to mid 200's at busy times, and close to 300 less peak times.

I think our NBN modem specialist guru here, would agree that your download figure shows a fault in your service.

What model of modem do you have? If it is a Smart Modem with 4G backup, a quick test would be to disconnect the WAN or DSL service to the modem, then give it a few minutes to switch to 4G, then try the speed test and see how it goes - it won't be as fast as 4G is capable of, probably locked down to less than 25Mbps down, but it will give you an idea of how stable 4G is at your location.

4G mobile broadband would be faster but it could be a lot dearer if you use a lot of data. There is an obvious fault on your FTTN link. Have any techs been out to investigate. Could you post your line status. The line status are located here on the Telstra modem's

we have the Telstra Gateway (Sagemcom F@st 5355). Standard Speed - NBN FTTN Technology Type. havent had a technician out to investigate, just thought it was how slow the internet is here!

Unfortunately, that modem doesn't have 4G backup..  There was a scheme going on where Telstra was upgrading modems to Smart Modem 2, but I don't know quite how it worked. If you can prove your current modem is faulty (as well as your NBN service) then Telstra might send you a new SM2 as a replacement

However, if you have a 4G handset, turn off Wi-Fi, then run Speedtest from that handset..  that will give you an even better indication of speed..

But, as @cf4  mentioned, mobile broadband costs might be a killer over a month..  I think the max plan allowance is 200 Gb for $75/mth. Prepaid is more expensive again.

Your internet seems slow, so it might need to be lodged as a fault, it might get you a new modem

Thanks for posting the link status. Judging from those figures the low speed doesn't look like it is caused by a link fault. Those figures indicate the link is capable of a download speed of over 25 Mbps and an upload speed over 5 Mbps.

Do you get the same low speeds on more than one device? Is the device connect by WiFi or Ethernet?

device is connect by wifi. the other devices connect are slow but not as slow. guessing the next step is to try and contact telstra?

Because it doesn't look like it is a line fault you might not get much assistance from Telstra. Support might supply you with a new modem as thr modem could be causing the low speed. One thing you could try changing the WiFi channels in the modem this sometimes solves a speed issue.

have connected the slowest device via ethernet cable and it is loads faster. so does that mean its the devices?

It does indicate the WiFi adapter on the device is the cause of the low speed.. You could try changing the WiFi channel in the modem to see if the speed is better on a different WiFi channel.

So it might be the device Wi-Fi hardware or trouble with the Wi-Fi connection (there are some modem settings you could try).

But it indicates that maybe your internet is actually OK.

Not hard, but you do need to be careful..

If you get stuck, just ask questions here..

The problem will be determining if the problem is actually a modem issue or the Wi-Fi adapter on your device. If other devices are connecting OK and speed is OK, it's the slow device so start by seeing if there are any driver updates for that devices Wi-Fi..or disable the onboard one then try a USB Wi-Fi adapter?

all the devices are slow. the computer that i normally use just happens to be the slowest

im a little scared to be fiddling around with settings, definitely not my forte

If you have any problems with changing the settings can always factory reset the modem by pressing reset button located below power button for at least 10 seconds. All settings are reset to factory defaults. The modem will automatically connect to internet after a reset.

Changing the WiFi channel could fix the slow speed as some WiFi devices have problems with some of the channels.
