Slow NBN connection... 100/40 gives 50/40

In my NBN Telstra modem its states that I am receiving 65mbits but not true... all testing says I am getting around 50mbits... Im supose to be on 100/40 and all previous adsl and adsl+2 I had up to 85% of what is said. I know I will not get 100 but I would expect at least 70+. I have rang the Telstra helps peeps and they even said that 50% is a good connection and I should not be complaining as it clearly states that I will or will not get the full 100mbits.... I said thats silly as I am getting 50% of what is promised...

So I would like to know what would be the next step becuase I out of prinsible will not take there response as correct and I will go to legal to fight it. But first I would like to look at all ways that I can get this solved... any suggestions????

Re: Slow NBN connection... 100/40 gives 50/40

If you have a FTTN connection the maximum speed depends on distance from the node. So if your modem is syncing at 65 Mb/s your probably about 400 Meters from the node.

The modem link speed can also be reduced by:

  1. Devices plugged into spare phone sockets.
  2. A filter/splitter between modem and phone socket (Modem not connected directly to gateway.
  3. A back to base alarm system that hasn't been removed correctly
  4. A central splitter that has not been disconnected.

The speed test can be effected by network congestion or poor Wi-Fi speed. Run the speed test from PC connected to LAN port of modem and during off peak period.

The speedboost is advertised as up to. If you are on FTTN, unless you are within about 400m cable length 100mpbs is not possible due to the limitations of the technology. 65mpbs would put you approx 600-800 metres from the node

If your sync rate in your modem stats is 65, that would be the absolute maximum you could achieve. the 100/40 plan is not a lock in contract and you may be better off downgrading to the 50/20 boost instead

50% of what's advertised is just a joke but if that's the case that's the case.

I do not see anywhere advertised 50/40???? Do you know the cost??

Re: Slow NBN connection... 100/40 gives 50/40

They call it Very Fast Speed Boost (50/20) and it is $20 instead of the $30 for the Super Fast Speed Boost (100/40)

(Just worth mentioning the drop in upload speed.)

FTTN is Fibre to the Node, it is the type of nbn connection which has a node/cabinet on the street and then uses the older copper line into the house instead of having fibre optic right into the house (which is called FTTP).

Fibre to the Node is all based on distance from the node and if you are more than a few hundred meters of cable length there is nothing that Telstra can do, it is a limitation of the technology that NBN Co and the current govt have adopted. If you needed 100Mbps about the only option would be to consider looking into change of technology but it will come at a cost.

Re: Slow NBN connection... 100/40 gives 50/40

From my knowledge of the current and recent plans, it sounds like you have a promotional discount on the speedboost. In that case it might be cheaper to stay on the 100/40 as it might not actually reduce your cost if you go down... in fact it could result in more if you are currently not paying anything extra for it.

Best bet would be to speak to sales though as they should be able to see what you have now and if you would be cheaper the other way, 1800 993 728.
