Static IP open ports.

I am considering getting a static IP for my home connection (NBN FTTP). I am planning to get a domain and set up a small mail server and web server.

Does the static IP service offered from Telstra allow multiple ports to be opened out of the box or are the ports blocked on that service as well?

My most recent call to Telstra suggested that I can get ports I require unblocked, if I pay for the premium tech support.

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Those sorts of configurations would be considered outside of the range of the standard tech support team as it isn't a 'standard' part of the service. It is certainly something that I would expect that indeed Platinum would be able to help with if you needed help with the configuration as they are there to provide more of an IT assistance.

Re: Static IP open ports.

If you're going to run a mail server in particular I'd recommend looking into a small business connection. From memory these come with a static IP and have reverse DNS options youll need for a mail server. You'll probably run into issues on a consumer service in terms of support once you start venturing into the realms of business equipment

Re: Static IP open ports.

Port 25 is blocked on the service. All other incoming ports are blocked by the gateway’s firewall and require port forwarding to be set up in the gateway, which is fairly easy to do.
