Terrible speed and latency in the evenings

As per the title, every night between 4-11 my connection turns to absolute garbage.

can't load a youtube video, page timeouts and I spent $100 on the new Call of Duty for nothing, because gaming is impossible with the ridiculous lag.

I get a max of about 200 kB/s down during these times

My router is synced at :

DownStream Connection Speed20431 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed1023 kbps

A traceroute to Bigpond shows how bad it is

I ran this at about 9pm tonight:

I got frustrated tonight and got onto the Telstra livechat.

Here's what they had to say:

Lionel

Hi Simon. I see that you have an enquiry about adsl2+ problems.

simon

I'm having problems wit my dsl

simon

yep

Lionel

May I please know what the problem is with your ADSL?

simon

every evening between 4-12 it turns to garbage.

simon

slow speeds terrible latency

Lionel

Sorry to hear about that, simon. Let me put you through a technical specialist who can check your

connection and help you with the speed issue.

simon

ta

Lionel

Please hold while I put you through.

simon

yep

Lionel has disconnected.

Diane has joined.

Diane

Hi there! How may I help you? :-)

simon

I'm having problems wit my dsl

Diane

I can see your usage that has spiked.

Diane

We are currently encountering an outage with usage that spiked that causes your slow speed.

Diane

The problem you are having is a known issue and our technicians are working to restore

functionality as a priority. Unfortunately, our technicians are still trying to resolve this issues and

we cannot provide a specific timeframe when will this issue be fixed.

Diane

I sincerely apologise that the resolution for this issue is taking longer than expected. This may be a

very complicated issue as a lot of our subscribers are also experiencing the same thing.

simon

spiked usage from me or from the area?

Diane

From Telstra's end. Don't worry, it won't add up to your bill.

simon

so the exchange is congested?

Diane

No.

simon

then what is causing it?

Diane

It's within the Telstra's end. We technicians don't have any idea.

Diane

Its our Internal Telstra Technicians who are fixing it.

simon

I get that, I wanted to know what was causing the problem

Diane

Its because your usage meter is being transferred to the new usage meter platform.

simon

how would that cause me to have latency issues between the aforementioned hours?

Diane

Usage spikes will cause slow speed connections.

simon

can you define usage spike for me?

Diane

Suddenly high usage without downloading anything.

Diane

Or not even using internet then your internet usage gets high.

Diane

Since you're not responding for 3 minutes, I will be forced to end this session.

Diane

Thank you very much for using our Live Chat Service. Please feel free to come back and chat with

us anytime, as we are always happy to assist you. Have a good night! :-)

Diane has disconnected.

simon has disconnected

(I was waiting for Diane to finish typing a message and then she posted that and then bailed on me.)

So, am I experiencing congestion or is it what Diane suggests?

I'm inclined to think it's the former and that Diane didn't have a clue what she was talking about.

Is there any solution to this problem?

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Sounds like congestion or WiFi issues to me.

Re: Terrible speed and latency in the evenings

They can confirm it and give you the required DSLAM ID so you can check http://www.telstrawholesale.com.au/download/document/backhaul-upgrade-list.xls and monitor it for any updates that may or may not be occurring to your infrastructure.

Also isolate to ethernet on 1 device.
