Tesltra nbn smart modem is applying parental controls 1 hour early

Hi guys,

all of a sudden, our telstra nbn smart modem is applying parental control times an hour early. Its almost as if somehow the system is on day light savings times 2 weeks early.

For example, my kids all came to me today and said that their devices had internet disabled before they had even finish school this afternoon. I had the device parental controls set to disable their internet at 4pm and yet they were kicked offline at 3pm!

I have checked the time zone settings on the modem and it is correctly set to +10 hours = sydney, melbourne (we live near melbourne).

How does one fix this? Doesnt the telstra network dns synchronise its own timezone settings!

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Tesltra nbn smart modem is applying parental controls 1 hour early

On the Arcardyan version of the Smart Modem 2, there is no Daylight Saving setting so any error in the time, would have to come from the NTP server. You could try setting the primary NTP server to 0.au.pool.ntp.org to see if that is better than the chronos.ntp.telstra.net ones. Keep a note of the original server name so you can put it back later.

If your mobile phones are set to use network time settings, are they affected as well? Maybe the NTP Server is on Nurse  Glays's 'picnic' time?

Re: Tesltra nbn smart modem is applying parental controls 1 hour early

I have changed the order of the NTP settings such that 0.au.pool.ntp.org ones are at the top.

I have looked at the log file this morning and i have another problem as well. Only one computer system on our home wifii network is being allowed to access the internet (this imac i am on right now). All other devices show the following error in log

17.09.2021 08:21:35 WiFi_Booster-[Prohibit Time] MAC=88:DE:A9:71:2D:B3 Added into unfriendly station list [RE-JOIN]. duration time:3600 secs.) failed.

This device has dozens of similar entries...i am not sure what this device actually is...I cant find this mac address on any of our computers here at home yet...i will update this post if i track down the device as it could be a media device we have such as google home mini or something like that.

I am unsure how this can happen overnight whilst i am asleep...all devices were working fine last night before bedtime and parental control settings are such that my kids devices should all have internet access from 07:00-18:00 every day.

the firewall is set to normal so i dont think this is anything to do with problem that has now arisen

any ideas?

Re: Tesltra nbn smart modem is applying parental controls 1 hour early

The WiFi_Booster entries are probably your modem, unless you have an actual Telstra Smart Wi-Fi Booster installed.

Telstra push out firmware updates overnight in most (but not all) cases) and the modem itself does a check to see if a firmware update is required, in the same hours.

Looks like you have the LH1000 version of the Smart Modem 2, can you check on the log in page and advise what firmware version you have? You will also be able to check the modem MAC address there (on on the label on the bottom).

Sometimes, after a firmware update, it is a good idea to do a power cycle of the modem to restart it (or do a restart from the management tab of the web page.

This entry is interesting, after the MAC address fails on other entries..

yes the modem is the following

Hostname: LH1000
FW Version: 0.15.16r

strangely enough, i disabled parental controls completely and now other devices are able to access the internet again. this doesnt make sense... what could be wrong with parental control settings below?

Re: Tesltra nbn smart modem is applying parental controls 1 hour early

The LH1000 has three MAC addresses - WAN, Wi-Fi 2.4 and Wi-Fi 5.

On mine they are very similar:

- WAN = xx:xx:xx:xx:ac:ac

- WI-Fi 5 = xx:xx:xx:xx:ac:ade

- WI-Fi 2.4 = xx:xx:xx:xx:ac:ae

In your log, the MAC addresses are not that close

- the WIFI 2.4 MAC shown in my previous post is BC:30:D9:F9:9E:4C

- the STA MAC is 88:DE:A9:71:2D:B3 so it is another device somewhere..  you will have to find that device and determine what it is - I suspect it is your Telstra TV box?

MAC addresses are usually vendor related. You can be search at sites like  MAC Address Lookup

Re: Tesltra nbn smart modem is applying parental controls 1 hour early

Yes, as @SteveW_52 has indicated that MAC belongs to Roku, the makers of the Telstra TV. Yours is the first 0.15.16r problem I have seen reported on Crowd Support, so unusual happenings. I am still on 0.14.12r.

In case Band Steering is Enabled after your firmware update and causing mischief, is it Disabled in your 2.4Ghz band settings. When Disabled, it will broadcast separate Wi-Fi broadcast names for each band rather than a common one.

Re: Tesltra nbn smart modem is applying parental controls 1 hour early

The same basic message was posted 3 times..  🙂

Do you mean that after disabling Parental Controls the time was correct? no hour ahead?

If you now re-enable Parental Controls, what happens?
