Unable to connect to internet services: IRC, BitTorrent

Hi,

I recently changed from iiNet's ADSL to Telstra cable. Since July 1 I have had no issues with my internet connection. Then, last Monday things stopped working.

I cannot connect to any IRC server for chat. I receive a connection timeout. I can ping the servers and run a trace route on them successfully. If I use my Telstra phone's wifi hotspot I can connect - this is not an issue with my PC/AV/firewall.

I also cannot connect to any BitTorrent trackers. Yes, BitTorrent is used to download copyrighted content, but believe it or not I was using it yesterday to get an updated Debian ISO. This is what prompted me to investigate the IRC issue. I am using the Debian torrent tracker and not a suspect site that may have been blocked under new federal guidelines.

I did not have any port forwarding configured, on the Sagemcom Fast 5355 gateway I was given. I configured the correct ports and reserved IP addresses for my computers, but still no dice. If I ask Transmission (torrent client) to test if it has an open port it confirms this is the case.

I can SSH to external servers. This requires an encrypted connection on port 22. So it isn't all port-specific traffic that is not reaching its destination. I cannot telnet to the IRC server, however.

It's been a long time since I had issues like this, UPnP and other technology have really simplified home networking! Can anyone provide any ideas on what to do? I use IRC for work. The torrent issue is a pain but not as high priority (but I am paying for an internet connection, so it should work...).

And yes, everything is up to date and I rebooted all the hardware.

I am running Windows 10 and Debian.

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Sagemcom F@ST 5355 Gateway is not a Cable Supported Modem. Please contact Telstra Tech Support on 133933 for a solution and modem upgrade

@CaptainKirk1 it is if it is part of the 2 box cable kits which include a cable adapter (Netgear CM450) which all recent cable connections/modem replacements now use

Re: Unable to connect to internet services: IRC, BitTorrent

This is correct, I have the Netgear cable modem.

Even if the Sagemcom Fast 5355 doesn't support cable modems, it is irrelevant to an issue that wasn't there before and is now there. Nothing has changed on my end of the coax cable. The issue appears to exist beyond my home.

I suppose I will pull out my old Linksys WRT-54GL and configure it to use the cable modem and see if that helps.

@hsimah certainly worth trying

Well I got the old WRT54GL out and plugged the cable modem into it. It connected fine and I can now connect to IRC and my torrent immediately connected.

I wonder what the issue with the Fast 5355 is. This was all working for months and then suddenly just stopped.

Unfortunately I now no longer have 5GHz wifi. I might try and set the 5355 into bridge mode and use it as a repeater.

Good job on the high quality hardware Telstra. My 12 year old router is better than the crap you've shipped to me.

Well on the plus side we know its not the service itself that is the issue

Factory resetting or tinkering with the firewall settings on the sagemcom might get some joy, but yes you can just bridge it and use it as a WAP
