Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

Hi all,

I am using a Modem on the NBN that normally connects to Internode NBN.

It has Telstra 4G fall back when the FTTN copper line goes faulty which it is in that situation now.  I am using Windows 7 Pro  with latest version of Thunderbird email program that works flawlessly on the FTTN Internet.

My Gmail imap account sends OK on the NBN FTTN via internode, however on the Mobile Telstra 4G hotspot it is not connecting with smtp.gmail.com when sending email, It does receive gmail OK).

My Other email accounts of Hotmail and Internode send OK via the Hotspot.

Being a Mobile Hotspot I have no Telstra email to direct the sending of gmail.

My unchanged Settings for sending Gmail are  smtp.gmail.com   SSL/TTL  Port 465.

I also tried STARTTLS Port 587.  Still can't connect to the gmail smtp.

All forum discussions say to use SSL/TTL and it will work but not for me.

I even changed my PC DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS Server)  No success in sending Gmail.

Please offer a solution besides deleting gmail which I need on my mobile phone.

Cheers  Mike

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

Hi - is this a new phenomena after using your configuration for a long time or are you setting up a new configuration? Assuming you are not using a Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 modem - just a few questions to clarify

1. What modem are you using for your Internode connection - have you connected an external Telstra 4G Hotspot to its USB port and configured the modem for a Dual WAN setup in Back Mode?

2. When you say Telstra 4G Hotspot, is this a Mobile Broadband Modem or you referring to your Mobile Phone?

3. I am not a gmail user, however Mobiles/Mobile Broadband Modems usually use IPv6 signaling which seems OK for your incoming emails - is there any setting in the 4G Hotspot that allows you to configure a dual function IP4/IP6 setting in case gmail smtp prefers IPv4?

4. People have had issues with Telstra email for the past two months, so it maybe related to that. I take it you have checked the Mobile Hotspot for current firmware and the Restarted it.

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

Suggest you try doing a tracert to smtp.gmail.com to try to determine what is causing problem. If the tracert fails to convert smtp.gmail.com to a IP address then it is a DNS issue. Try changing the IPv6 DNS on the PC.

Are you receiving any error message?

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I am using a Fritz Box 7590 connected to an internode FTTN service.  It is configured to fall back to a 4G USB connection which is a Telstra MF910 Mobile Hotspot (Broadband only).

The 7590 modem and the MF910 is using IPv4 adressing.

The MF910 firmware is MF910_M07 and reports it is up to date.

Note I also tried tethering to my mobile phone which is a Samsung Galaxy S10+ using a Telstra prepaid SIM card and had the same issue with sending gmail.

I once tried this last year with the same issues, so its a long term issue.

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

Hi cf4,

I tried doing a tracert to smtp.gmail.com

it resolves via the 7590 modem to the FTTN NBN with a last hop of 74.125.24.109,

However via the MF910 is is unable to resolve. target system name smtp.gmail.com

So there appears to be a DNS issue in the MF910 or with Telstra.

The PC obtains its IP and DNS from the modem it is connected to.

In this test for the MF910 it was just a simple connection via WiFi from the PC to the MF910 and not via the 7590 modem.

Here is the traces...1st one is the 7590 on the NBN, the second is the MF910.

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

cf4

Here is an amendment to my last message.

I discovered that the roaming outside Australia box was ticked in the MF910,  The smtp.google.com now resolves in 225mS to the same IP as when on the NBN (143mS).

However Thunderbird is still giving  a send email error message.

(I did close down Thunderbird and re-open as well)

Quote:   Login to server smtp.gmail.com with username ****.gmail.com failed.

So still a mystery as a simple WiFi change back to the 7590 modem allows sending gmail OK.

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

You could try increasing Thunderbirds timeout (Tools->Options->Advanced->General->Config Editor)

If you use another hotspot (example mobile phone) do you get the same message?

Does Gmail on your phone work when connected to the MF910 hotspot?

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

Hi cf4,

With the laptop logging into the Telstra Mobile Hotspot OR to my Mobile Phone Hot Spot gmail in Thunderbird has the same problemd.  Gmail on the phone works OK as it is a Google Web access Link not a standalone email App.  I will try extending the timeout time for Thunderbird and get back to you.

Hi cf4,

There are a few dozen timeout lines in the config..  Which one do you advise.

Re: Unable to send Gmail using Telstra 4G mobile HotSpot

Hi cf4 and Mkrtich

Well  Surprise Surprise.   Gmail send is now working via Telstra Hotspot using Thunderbird with no changes since it didn't work.

I had not tried it for a week and assumed it was still a problem.

Today I thought I would  try another email program called Seamonkey and it worked.

So I retried Thunderbird and it worked.

Next I uninstalled Seamonkey and Thunderbird still sends OK via Telstra Hotspot.

I can only think that Telstra had problems passing gmail from PC email clients that used even secure email settings.

So for the moment its Solved but no idea what the problem was.

Thanks for your feedback. Glad it has stabilised and is working properly now. Sometimes unexpected things happen with communications and we remain unaware of why and how they get corrected. Cheers
