Extra phone line, same number

Answered

Since the NBN HFC has been installed, and our phone wall sockets are useless, we need to sort out our home phone situation. I know a technician will cost.

Our modem is downstairs. My mother in law lives upstairs. We've tried the t-voice and other cordless phones but she just can't get the hang of them. What we want is a line upstairs that she can plug an old-lady-phone into. I'm having trouble explaining to Telstra what I want and I keep getting told that I can just plug a phone into the modem and it will work fine, or they assume I want an extra line with a different number and quote me plans.

Has anyone else been through this? Who should I talk to to explain what I need and can I arrange this online?

Re: Extra phone line, same number

Do you have sockets upstairs already?

If so, all you may need to do is run a phone cable from the green slot on the back of the modem to one of your existing phone wall sockets and you may be able to use the other ones you have.

If that doesn't work, or you don't have a socket within reach of the modem, what you can do is get the main socket to the house isolated (if the lead-in is still connected. In theory it shouldn't be so may not be required), then an additional socket installed near the modem which is linked to the other remaining sockets. Any ACMA licensed cabler can do this (most electricians have this license), or you can contact Telstra Platinum via 137 587 (it may be able to be organised via live chat but not via like an online form) and request a technician visit for an additional connection point to be installed.
