Can't check for software update for Telstra 4GX WI-FI MF910Z

Answered

I've had a Telstra 4GX WI-FI MF910Z for about 3 years that we use when we travel. One of the places we go is Inverloch (Victoria) where connectivity is notoriously bad but has just become even worse, to the point of being unusable.

The modem fluctuates between no service or 3G at best where we stay, and even on 3G it won't download my emails. I thought perhaps it needs a software update but when I got into the Device Settings > Software Update > Update Now I just get a spinning wheel and then eventually it logs me out.

The modem works if I go into the main town area of Inverloch - there it gives me 4G and that's all good for the work I need to do but obviously travelling into the main street every time I need to work isn't a viable option.

Any advice? It's driving me batty!

Thanks in advance.

Hi there Sassy7, if you're in a lower coverage area we recommend blue tick handsets for lower reception areas: https://tel.st/55m4p and you can find out more about what this means here: https://tel.st/9jkkl . Jupiter is correct, an antenna can help boost reception inside: https://tel.st/q7r3w to improve the situation indoors. We also have external options which Mobile Assurance can chat with you if you were wanting to look into these options, you can get in contact with our team over the Telstra app by clicking 'get help' and sending through a message. You can check for black spot upgrade plans which may affect you here: https://tel.st/32gb4 or provide coverage feedback which may be used in future planning.

External antennas would be the only suggestion. It can take 2.

Which end of Inverloch do you stay at? I've usually been in the Eastern end, and haven't had any problems there. The western end, down near Venus St/Ocean View Court would be the most problematic area as the hill gets in the way of both the Towers at the Recreation Reserve and near the Mitre 10.

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.

Thanks. I have considered the antennas but I'm dubious they'll do much. Probably worth a try though if they're not too expensive. We're located closer to the surf club, so I'm not sure if we're blocked from the towers. Interesting to know that's where they are!
