Purchasing mobile hotspot

I am looking to purchase a Netgear Nighthawk M2 - Black (Outright Purchase Only). Many of them state ‘This device is locked to Telstra network’. I am with Telstra already for nbn etc and wish to buy a prepaid sim for this device - does this matter?
