It sounds like you were on one of the old plans that are no longer available and are being moved to one of the current plans.
The options are to try and get a discount on the new plan (but that requires being able to get through to 132200, which is only handling critical calls at the moment), move to a Prepaid plan, or port to a different provider. Belong, who is owned by Telstra, has plans starting from $10/mth and is tailored to people who don't have large data requirements.
Note: it doesn't have full access to the Telstra network, so coverage is reduced slightly.
Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
