Re: Conference Call on prepaid not working

All Telstra Mobile Post and Pre-Paid customers are now automatically provided with Call Waiting, free of charge. All customers are also provided with 3 Way Chat and Conference Call at the network level, free of charge

To ensure the network is updated “turning-off” and “turning-on” your phone in a mobile coverage area to pick up the new feature. Also please check your phones user guide on how to use this feature.

As you can have upto 5 outgoing calls now at once please be careful about the plan you are using.

Some of my draft notes to get you started.

- Conference calls are charged at your standard mobile phone rate for each party linked to the conference call, according to your plan.
- The person making the outgoing calls is charged for the each of the calls made to conference participants.
- With conference calls you can connect up to five workmates, friends or family on a single call.
- There are no separate access fees or set up charges for using conference.
- If Call waiting is enabled conference calling can be provoked for any combination of up to 5 incoming or outgoing calls.
- If you set up a conference call it will appear on your bill / call history as individual calls to each party involved.
- The calls will have overlapping starting and finishing times.

For example:

If you have three other parties on a conference call, two mobile customer in Australia and Fixed customer, you will be charged your standard mobile rates for the two mobile calls and the standard fixed rate for the fixed call.

If you then receive an incoming call and conference this in then you will not be charged for this incoming call. However the person who called you will be charged the normal cost of the call to you.

How it works:

To use Conference all you need is a compatible phone. The user manual for your phone should indicate whether it's able to support conference calls and provide specific instructions for managing them. Your conference feature will already be enabled when you connect with us.

For a late model Android device:

-Make a call to the first conference call participant.
-Tell them to stay on the line while you add other parties
-Using Menu / Add Call option Call the other parties to invite them to the conversation
-The first participant is put on hold. They will hear Hold tone every 5 sec
-You can also bring incoming calls into the conference if call waiting is active.
-When connected to the second participant, tap the join arrow.
-All parties can hear each other speaking. They will hear conference pips every 15 seconds.
-To add another participant, tap + symbol , and then dial the number of the contact.
-When connected to the next participant, tap the join arrow.
-Up to 6 parties can join the conversation including the originator
-To talk to a person in the conference call in private, tap and then select Private call.
-To end the call with a individual participant, tap them and then tap Finish this call. Or they can simply hang up.
-To end the conference, just hang up. Once you have ended the call, the call will end for the invitees

FAQ:

-Can Call Waiting, 3 Way Chat & Conference Call work with Telstra Messagebank?

If you hear the tone for a second incoming call whilst already on a call, then ignore that call, it will then be diverted to MessageBank (providing you have a diversion set).

It is advisable to use MessageBank and these services separately. This is because if you attempt to retrieve MessageBank messages as a 3 Way Chat, or as part of a Conference Call, then the DTMF tones used to drive this may be interpreted by MessageBank as commands for MessageBank.

-The feature is not working.

Ensure the network is updated by “turning-off” and “turning-on” your phone in a mobile coverage area to pick up the new feature. Also please check your phones user guide on how to use this feature.

-What if one of the parties "drops out" whilst in Call Waiting, 3 Way Chat or Conference Call?

Call charging will be as per any call which drops out – ie. charging ceases once the call drops out.

-Can I use the Call Waiting, 3 Way Chat & Conference Call when travelling overseas?

Access to Call Waiting, 3 Way Chat & Conference Call cannot be guaranteed overseas, as the facilities available on the overseas network may be limited..

-Why are there duplicate calls on my bill?
If there are several calls with the same date and same/similar times, these calls may be part of a Conference Call which you made. Also, if there are several calls, each commencing over a period of time, they may also be part of a Conference Call (eg. A call may be 20 minutes long, but the subsequent calls after this call may have also been commenced within this time period, but will not have a similar date and time to the first call).

-What are the call charges for 3-Way Calling?

Charges apply for all three calls while all parties remain on the line in accordance with your Calling Plan. As you can have 5 calls running at once please keep this in mind. For prepaid if run out of credit during the conference the call will be terminated.

-While on a 3-Way call, how do you release one call and continue with the other?

To disconnect one or more parties the easiest way is to just ask them to hang up.

Hey Jonnyy,

I haven't personally heard of any issues with iPhones and Conference calling. Can you please confirm that your on the Carrier Build Telstra 11.1. If not, can you plug your computer into iTunes and perform an update.

PS: I've only been able to test on a Post-Paid service. I'll see if I can borrow my little brothers phone (iPhone 4 on Pre-Paid) to see if I can test it here Smiley Happy

Re: Conference Call on prepaid not working

Sadly, both conference calling and visual voicemail - both awesome features - are "turned off" on the prepaid accounts. Postpaid has access to these services even though i suspect many don't use them...i certainly haven't seen many people on postpaid making good use of either ...

i have spoken at length with both prepaid and postpaid specialists on the telstra helpline, and this is all at telstra's discretion - postpaid customers have these conveniences because presumably they are valued more highly - there are no technical barriers to the provision of these services to prepaid customers....

and, even if you request to prepay some fee for these services, there is no possibility ...  i really value these services when i have them (they are available in other countries) but i really really don't want a postpaid account ... with postpaid i have an unlimited downside risk in a 'bill blowout' and no flexibility when it comes to lowering my monthly outlays if i am outside the country..

maybe we ought to lobby on here to ask telstra revise their policy on conference calling and visiual voicemail for the prepaid customers...

Hi Everyone,

We've created the general steps that you can follow here to make a conference call, whether you are a post paid or prepaid customer.  Or you can also search via http://www.telstra.com.au/help/

However with that said not all devices are supported in the market place. Currently I am seeking confirmation on which ones are supported, so stay tuned for an update.

Re: Conference Call on prepaid not working

The only reply here from telstra and they link to a page that has nothing to do with an iphone, does not help with the original question or offer any information on the limits that telstra are obviously putting on prepaid features!!!

The only regret i have in moving from vodafone to telstra is the inability, on prepaid, to use visual voicemail (messagebank plus) and call conferencing. Iv'e had both an iphone 3gs and now an iphone 5 and still the same situation on both fronts.

"CrowdSurfer" either you obviously didn't read the question posted, or, everything "springtail" said in the reply previous you already know this as true...

It all comes down to making an extra buck. But i'm surprised telstra doesn't give these "non expense" features that are built into the iphone to the customers that can leave telstra the easiest.

Re: Conference Call on prepaid not working

Floppybob - VVM (Messagebank Plus) has never been advertised as available on Pre-Paid services.

As for Conference Calling, I'll see if I can flag this one to Moderators to see if we can get an answer.

Re: Conference Call on prepaid not working

Hi Everyone,

Confirmation that Messagebank Plus isn't available to prepaid - it is being looked at though.

Conference calling on prepaid is also a grey area so I am seeking final confirmation on this.

So, if you are currently able to conference call/make 3 way calls from your Telstra Pre-Paid, feel free to PM me and i can collate the examples for our network/tech team.

Thanks and sing out if you have any othe questions..

We also have the FAQ around conference calling here.

Re: Conference Call on prepaid not working

Conference call -> you don't need to wait for confirmation.  It is NOT WORKING!!!

So much for paying for a 'premium' service.  Would have gone to optus if they werent having a black spot in my area.

An update is a bit long overdue, I've confirmed since that it doesn't work as expected.
