Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

Answered

My Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 is still running with firmware version 0.13.01r.

Does or will this automatically update to the latest version 0.14.12r , or is it necessary to contact Support ???

I ask as I want to invoke URL filtering at modem level and that certainly does not work with v0.13.01r but is shown in the version notes for v0.14.12r as an example, so I'm assuming it is fixed with that version.

It looks like you will need to contact support. Should not be getting those errors after the factory reset.

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

The modem should automatically update. Not all modem's get updated at the same time so just because modem doesn't have the latest firmware doesn't mean something is wrong. I am still waiting for my Technicolor modem to be updated. Support are reluctant to force an update and will only force an update if you are experiencing a problem with the modem.

One thing that could be preventing the update is if the modem has lost communications with the maintenance server. To check if modem is communicating with maintenance server log into the modem and go to Advanced log viewer. Filter the log by TRS069. If you see events like below then modem has lost it connection. This can usually be fixed by doing a factory reset.

25.03.2021 15:58:32 TR069: ACS connection failed with error code 401

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

Hi cf4,

Thanks for your response.

Apart from the URL filter not working, I discovered another mysterious behaviour after we briefly lost power.  Once everything was back, up and running, WiFi connections from our mobiles (fixed MAC addr) could not be made.  I had to delete and re-enter the MAC addresses into the WiFi ACL whitelist. Not the first time that's been observed by me.  Never had either of these issues with the BP Cable modem !!

I have looked at the logs and although I didn't see the exact same message I found this ...

05.08.2021 19:29:49 TR069: Inform Fail!!(Invalid URL or ACS unreachable)
05.08.2021 19:29:49 TR069: ACS connection failed with error code 0

My next course of action is to save my configuration settings and then do a factory reset, waiting for an hour or two to see if the firmware updates itself.  If not I guess I'll be speaking to the Phillipines Support.

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

After doing factory reset don't load the backup until after the modem has updated. Loading backup could prevent communications with maintenance server.

Suggest you leave modem for at least 24 hours before speaking to support. They might redirect you to platinum support but as it it is a fault with Telstra equipment the fee should be waived.

The problem with MAC filtering is not  a modem bug but due to IOS and Android devices randomly changing there MAC address. This was added as a security feature in a recent firmware update and can be turned off in there settings.

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

Hi cf4,

My intent was to reload the CFG after 24hrs.

Factory reset has been done.  No firmware update has occurred as yet.

Strangely just after the reset a new browser page was opened, resulting with an 403 error. to http://www.msftconnecttest.com/login.htm

The log shows a connection to ACS fail .....

06.08.2021 10:55:12 TR069: Start agent software check
06.08.2021 10:55:12 TR069: Agent software is up-to-date.
06.08.2021 10:55:13 TR069: Sending 6 CONNECTION REQUEST inform to ACS.
06.08.2021 10:55:13 TR069: Inform Fail!!(Invalid URL or ACS unreachable)
06.08.2021 10:55:13 TR069: ACS connection failed with error code 0
06.08.2021 10:55:13 TR069: Next ACS connection in 9 seconds

The rest of the log from the last entry all looks good to me.

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

It has been stated here by Telstra reps and also on Smart Modem threads at Whirlpool, that the SM2's will often do a firmware update afte a long power cycle, turn the modem off for half and hour or so, then power it back on and just leave it for a while (don't do anything - no changing settings etc.) and just monitor the front indicator, it will come up to the steady green state and then after a little while it might trigger the update with the indicator going white..

I have had this happen on some LH1000's but certainly not all the ones I have setup, so I believe there is still some need to fit in with Telstras update rollout calendar.....

It isn't much fun just waiting and doing nothing, but Telstra doesn't really do anything, except billing, in a hurry so sometimes you just have to wait....  and wait and then wait some more

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

Hi StevE_52,

I powered off for an hour or so, with no change of outcome.

After contacting Telstra Support I was forwarded to Platinum Support.  I was informed that my modem was working correctly as v0.13.01r was the latest version of firmware. Furthermore, that their systems had no record of v0.14.12r despite what is indicated on the Firmware Notes page for this modem....

https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/broadband-nbn/arcadyan-firmware-update-notes-0-14-12r/ta-p/93...

I have sent a message to 'Gamgees' regarding the latest version discrepancy. Awaiting his response.

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

As I said, I have hit and miss reactions to the supposed power off update. It just doesn't work sometimes. It would be nice to have a manual Firmware update option in the GUI, and at the same time to manually select an older firmware (restore older/previous) option, but I don't think it will happen..

I think  Platinum support is wrong (which is disappointing at that level), my LH1000 definitely shows v0.14.12r as being installed and operational right now...  That update arrived on my modem about 9am one day, several weeks after I first saw references to it here and on Whirlpool..  I don't know how Telstra manage those roll outs...

On another occassion I was setting up 4 LH1000's to deploy as replacements for damaged items after an electrical storm. All devices were bought from the second hand market and were new, unused and still sealed. I set them up in a daisy chain as 1 2 3 and 4 (setup the IP ranges as seperate) all running of the 4G SIM in #1  - within 2 hours 1, 3 & 4 all updated to 0.14.12r..   but #2 took 2 days (no change to configuration in that time)..  hard to figure why..

Hi Stevo 52,

Thanks for the update and confirmation that the newer firmware IS in fact being rolled out.  I guess I will have to push Platinum Support harder.

Did you get any updates on this? I have three LH1000's in my home, 2 were being used as Access Points, with one main router. The main router updated to 0.14 when it first released, the other 2 were on 0.11 and 0.12. Over the last few days, I've been trying to get the additional 2 LH1000s to update to 0.14, however, I can only get them to update to 0.13. They don't go any further. I will try the long Power Cycle this afternoon, as well as leaving it for a few days to see if one eventually updates (can only do one at a time, with 4G sim in, and connected via WAN with alternate 192.168.1.1 IP)

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

The WAN IP using 4G will not be 192.168.1.1    that IP is for the modem GUI amanagement interface.

The WWAN IP should be in the 10.XXX.XXX.XXX range under normal circumstances..

Sorry, what I meant to say that it is just my exisiting Router for the internet. Therefore, the WAN is like 192.168.0.133 or something, but the router IP is 192.168.1.1 and assigns IPs in the 192.168.1.x range to not interfere with my normal network. Doing this forced an update to 0.13.x, but hasn't pushed the 0.14 update...

Re: Arcadyan LH1000 - How to get Firmware Updated to latest version

Hi the_antipot,

My latest call to Support resolved nothing.  They still say that v0.13 is the latest version.  Given that elsewhere on Crowd Support the latest version is 0.14 and that others (cf4 and SteveW_52) have reported v0.14 actually being installed, I raised a complaint asking WHY my modem is not updating.  To date there has been no response to that complaint.

I also sent a private message to "Gamgees" regarding v0.14.  I've had no response from him either.

I'm figuring that v0.14 was probably 'pulled' and that the firmware once updated cannot be returned to an earlier version.

The v0.13 firmware on the Arcadyan LH1000 has been cited as vulnerable to an 'Authentication Bypass Issue'.  See https://securityaffairs.co/wordpress/120908/hacking/cve-2021-20090-iot-attacks.html .  Given that situation I am not at all pleased with my fruitless attempts to receive the not vulnerable v0.14 firmware to date.

That is disappointing from Telstra's end. I saw another thread on here that someone had a LH1000 and it was on 0.13 - but after leaving it for a few days, the 0.14 version was pushed to their router - that was only 2 weeks ago. So it seems the update is still in circulation, but just very sporadic in when it's deployed, which is weird.
