Changing wifi password

I have ppl accessing my wifi, that no longer require access. I have changed my wifi password with Telstra support & have been informed, that any devices previously connected, will still be able to access it. This kind of defeats the purpose of changing it. Is this true & if so, how can I change it, where access requires the new password? Thanks!

That information is incorrect.

Changing the password will prompt any WiFi devices connected to it previously to have to re-connect and the new password would need to be entered
