D-Link 5300 Setup on Telstra NBN (HFC)

Answered

Hi,

I have recently switched from TPG NBN to Telstra NBN (HFC) and am using a third party modem: D-Link 5300.

I would like to know how to configure the D-Link 5300 to Telstra's NBN. I have been reading related posts and have spoken to Telstra directly and have received conflicting information.

I was told by the Telstra operator that I should configure the D-Link to PPPoE and have provided me with a username and password.

Online however, has recommended that I configure the modem as DHCP as it does not require a modem or password.

I have tried both approaches but my modem is still not connecting. Can someone please help me and provide step by step instructions on how to configure my D-Link modem? I feel like I'm missing a step in the process.

P.S. I know the internet works because when I connect the Telstra supplied Next Gen 2 modem the internet works fine.

Much appreciated!

Re: D-Link 5300 Setup on Telstra NBN (HFC)

You plug the NBN NTD into the Internet port on the back of the D-Link 5300.

Then go in to the modem's homepage and start the connection wizard.

Select Ethernet WAN for the Internet Access Type

Then it should be DHCP for the connection type and leave the username and password blank.

If that doesn't work, try plugging your computer directly in to the NBN NTD and see if you get access. If not, you service hasn't been provisioned (your Telstra modem may have been working on LTE backup).

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.

Re: D-Link 5300 Setup on Telstra NBN (HFC)

Set up as per pages 30, 31,45  and 46 of manual

http://files.dlink.com.au/products/DSL-5300/REV_A/Manuals/DSL-5300_A1_Manual_v1.00(WW).pdf

This is settings I would use.

WAN Access Type:  Residential Gateway

Ether WAN port: 1

Connect LAN port 1 to the NBN NTD

Enable Tagged VLAN: Disabled

My Internet Connection is: Dynamic IP

Host Name: Leave blank

Primary DNS: Leave blank or enter your preferred DNS server

Secondary DNS: Leave blank or enter your 2nd preferred DNS server

MTU: Auto

MAC Address: Use default.

Re read the manual and noticed the modem had a dedicated WAN port so my original instructions on how to connect D-Link-5300 to NTD are wrong.

.

The WAN port of D-Link-5300 should be connected to NTD.

D link needs no auth for NBN. @cf4 might have more in depth instructions

Re: D-Link 5300 Setup on Telstra NBN (HFC)

Can you plug your Telstra modem back in and check to see that it connects to your NBN connection and not just the LTE backup?

With the settings that you have entered, the D-Link should be connecting and I still suspect that your NBN connection isn't working.

I noticed you have VLAN enabled. I would have left that disabled.

This worked! It appeared that I should have had WLAN off instead of on.

Really appreciate everyone's help on this.
