Google wifi and NBN

Answered

I have the Gen 2 smart modem connected via WAN to my HFC NBN as per Telstra instructions. My google wifi is connected to the modem via LAN port. When I try to set up my google wifi via google home, I get the message “problem connecting with the cloud” and other times I will get the message “plug in WAN”. I’ve tried turning the wifi button off on the modem to see if that will help but it doesn’t. Is google wifi compatible with the gen 2 modem? And what am I doing wrong with setup?

Did you set the Google WAN type to DHCP?

With the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app
  2. Tap Wi-Fi
and then Settings  and then Advanced networking.
  3. Tap WAN.
  4. Choose DHCP.
  5. Tap Save

Re: Google wifi and NBN

There are two versions of the Gen 2 modem, one made by Arcadyan (LH1000) and the other by Technicolor (DJA0231). Which version do you have?

Connecting the Google WiFi to a LAN port of the Gen 2 modem results in double NAT. It is better to connect the  Google WiFi directly to the NBN HFC modem and if you need a phone service connect the WAN port of the Telstra modem to Ethernet port on one of the Google WiFi units.

If you do connect the Google WiFi to the Gen 2 modem's LAN port should set the  Google nest in the DMZ of the Gen 2 modem.

I have the Technicolor modem. I tried connecting the wifi directly to the HFC modem and the modem WAN to google wifi but this does not seem to work.
