Is "Telstra Gateway Connection Kit" a "Smart Modem"?

Answered

Hi,

My MIL got a "Telstra Gateway Connection Kit" when she signed up for NBN.

I'm trying to work out if that means she would have a "Smart Modem", as I want to get her the "Telstra Smart Modem Battery Back Up" from the rewards store as a Xmas present.

The specs say "Compatible with Telstra Smart Modem (Gen 1 & 2)" but what I can't work out if that's the modem she would have or not.

Thanks!

Hi - the Telstra Gateway Connection kits were distributed to early NBN customers and unfortunately they are not classified as Smart Modems - if the modem resembles those pictured on this eBay page, likely to be the Sagemcom F@ST5355 or Technicolor TG800vac.

The Smart Modems are branded Gen 1 is a Technicolor DJA0230, the Gen 2 is either Technicolor DJA0231 or Arcadyan LH:1000.

I get the impression the Smart Modems must have a special power sensing mechanism which is absent from other modems and other 240 volt powered Telstra equipment.

That depends on how long ago it was when she switched to the NBN. If it has a mobile light on it then it is a Smart Modem. The modems prior to that did not have that light (or functionality).

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
