Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

Here's a general guide to trying to get thwe VOIP to work using the gateway as an access point:

Setup and Configuration

  1. The Telstra Gateway has to be already connected and registered on the NBN Connection (E.g They are able to get both internet and voice services through it). If the modem (In particular the Voice Service) has not been registered yet it will not work
  2. Log into the Gateway and disable the WiFi
  3. Make sure the Gateway's IP Address DOES NOT MATCH the IP Address of the Third Party Modem/Router. If so, adjust it to something else (E.g 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1) and then Reboot the Gateway
  4. Disable DHCP on the Gateway
  5. Setup the Third Party Modem/Router on the NBN Connection
  6. Plug an Ethernet Cable from one of the LAN ports on the Third Party Modem/Router, to the WAN port on the Telstra Gateway
  7. Make sure the Phone light changes to green on the Gateway

Make sure you test both incoming and outgoing calls

Troubleshooting Issues

As using a Telstra Gateway as a NBN phone access point is not officially supported by Telstra, there are limitations on the amount of troubleshooting that can be done. If you are experiencing issues with incoming or outgoing calls, try the following:

  • Port Forwarding the following ports to the Gateway:
    • TCP/UDP: 5060-5061
    • UDP: 10000-20000
    • Some people have also had success with adding 5004 UDP & 3478 TCP/UDP

  • DMZ'ing the Telstra Gateway in the Third Party Modem/Router
  • Checking to see the if the Third Party Modem/Router has any SIP ALG or SIP Passthrough options. Try to adjust these settings and see if it makes any difference. On a Netgear Modem/Router during testing, SIP ALG had to be switched on for the phone to successfully work correctly

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

If you have NBN on FTTP, you can contact billing to request that your phone service be changed from T-Voice Advanced to T-Voice Standard which uses the Uni-V port on your NBN network termination device.

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

so I'm a total derp and had the router plugged into a port I have Vlaned away from the rest of my network...   so that is why i wasn't getting a DHCP assigned address.

so the phone is responding now and the LAN ports are accessing the internet.

Telstra air and wifi, are currently a no go

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

is this the DHCP server on the ipfire box?

Also in your particular setup,  you would not need to disable the wifi on the gateway if the ipfire box is not supplying wifi. You may be able to re-enable it just by pressing the Wifi button on the modem. If not it is probably easier to factory reset the modem and then run through the steps again but leave the wifi on

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

that's not whats happening...

my ipfire or pfsense (I've tried both) box can't get an ipv6 address from Telstra, nor a local prefix to designate to the LAN.

and the Telstra gateway wifi is up but when I connect to it I can't get internet access.   not can I connect to the Telstra air hotspot.

I've also noticed that if I turn my computer off for the night and come back the next day the internet has stopped working... but if I leave my pc on all night it stays up.

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

IPv6 WAN IP's are only available on NBN connections, and not all of them at that (mine doesn't).

Does the wifi work if you're just using the gateway normally without bridging it or having the firewall box in between?

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

I get an ipv6 address for my Telstra gateway if I plug it directly into the NBN FTTP box and I get an ipv6 prefix address for my LAN too.   but I don't through my 3rd party firewall.

the wifi is active, and connect-to-able but when I connect to it, I can't connect to the internet through the gateway when the firewall is in place first.

but the wifi and the Telstra air works when the Telstra gateway is plugged straight into the NBN box.

and I used to have an IPv6 address on adsl2... I volunteered for the trial program.   then it took me a year and a half to get my ipv6 again over NBN

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

If you have no trouble with gateway when it's plugged in directly, you may have to ask over at the ipfire forums or possibly whirlpool. I haven't used an ipfire box so can't really give any configuration advice

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

I've been experimenting with 3rd party firewall software and it's not just limited to IPFire...

what kind of ipv6 is used in the Telstra community?

is it slaac?   dhcp6?   a tunnel? i can't seem to get any of them to work

Re: ports for firewall in front of telstra router

It is DHCP6

TBH i'm not sure why your box isn't picking up an IPV6 address
