Specific sites slow/blocked on ADSL modem - suspect IPv4/6 issue

Hi all,

As I have tried repeatedly to get Telstra to understand the issue I'm having with my ADSL wifi modem and STILL get no joy from them, I have resorted to this board as a location for a possible solution.

I have started having a problem with accessing specific sites and content. Sites like Google Drive, LinkedIn and the Bureau of Meteorology are very slow, and I can't get to any abc.net.au sites at all. All time out. Even most Google searches are impossible. I have previously had no issue accessing any of these sites or dealing with anything other than standard and periodic lag issues.

All devices (multiple PCs, iPad, android phones) have the same symptoms when connected via wi-fi. When I connect via a mobile data connection, these sites operate and load normally.  I have gone through all the troubleshooting options available, I have reset the wifi channels and I have tried connecting via ethernet cable directly from the modem - nothing works. The model I am using is a TG587 ADSL modem.

When I run an IPv4 vs IPv6 readiness test (at http://test-ipv6.com/) I get these results:

Test with IPv4 DNS record  ok (3.939s) using ipv4
Test with IPv6 DNS record  bad (2.805s)
Test with Dual Stack DNS record ok (3.918s) using ipv4
Test for Dual Stack DNS and large packet ok (3.337s) using ipv4
Test IPv4 without DNS ok (3.892s) using ipv4
Test IPv6 without DNS timeout (12.784s)
Test IPv6 large packet bad (3.242s)
Test if your ISP's DNS server uses IPv6 bad (3.228s)
Find IPv4 Service Provider ok (2.913s) using ipv4 ASN 1221
Find IPv6 Service Provider bad (2.844s)

Results are obvious - only getting IPv4. I wonder if this may be the issue that need resolving at Telstra's end?

Below is a ping/tracert of the ABC address taken from one PC. Any advice appreciated to resolve.

Re: Specific sites slow/blocked on ADSL modem - suspect IPv4/6 issue

abc.net.au appears to drop ICMP packets so a traceroute/ping will not work in this case. (i can access abc.net.au fine via name and ip but am unable to tracert or ping it either at home or through a proxy). My connection is also ipv4 and have no issues with those sites.

Also you will probably find that no Telstra ADSL connections have moved over to ipv6. AFAIK only NBN connections are ipv6 at this stage. As it is, you will be more likely to reach those sites using an ipv4 address then ipv6, as there is some DNS teething issues from time to time with ipv6 traffic

I have been having a similar problem today. Cannot connect to networks like pan and google from all devices in the home. However when using my mobile data as a hot-spot can connect fine and ping tests all work fine

Re: Specific sites slow/blocked on ADSL modem - suspect IPv4/6 issue

Myself and many people (not all) in our area have been having problems with various sites either slow to load or not loading at all today.  Even Netflix wouldnt work. Arrrrg. So I changed the TV and the PC DNS from Telstra DNS to an alternate and now both Netflix and PC are working fine. I think the Telstra DNS servers and are the problem
