Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Yes I understand that latest firmware may not fix the SMB problem.  But at least if the router is taking future updates, there is some chance that this and other problems will eventually get fixed.  As it is now, nothing will ever get fixed.

No, I'm using SMB 2 or 3, given that SMB 1.0 is no longer recommended.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

When I do a test to see if Port 445 open from my PC which is connected by WiFi to my file server which is connected by LAN it shows port as open.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Thanks cf4.

I tested a SMB connection, and the same Port tester and it failed.

I logged into the router turned off the firewall, and the port test then worked (as did the SMB connection).

I turned the firewall back on and the port test and SMB connection kept working.  I'd seen this before, and it would eventually get blocked after a certain amount of time.

However - 2 hours later and the SMB connection and port test is still working !

Nothing's changed in my environment, router firmware is 0.09.11r - but it now appears to be working.

I'll keep the SMB connection open overnight and see how it goes (fingers crossed)

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Update: Opened up my Mac this morning (wireless connection) and the SMB to my wired NAS still worked !!

Checked on a Windows 10 laptop (wireless) and was able to also connect a SMB share on the wired NAS successfully.

Double checked the router and the firewall was still turned on ('normal' defense strength)

So, it's now all looking good on firmware 0.09.11r

Anyone else with the original issue able to claim success?  (For me turning off the firewall, and then turning it on again got it going ???  )

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

The saga continues... yesterday I received a replacement router from Telstra.  But it was no use at all - it had the exact same firmware version as mine, so (I thought) it would have all the same problems - specifically that it would be unable to update its firmware.  I tried a few things with it, but ended up putting it back in the box and it will be returned to Telstra, and I put the original one back in place.

I then thought I would try something suggested much earlier in this thread - I reset the old router to factory defaults and left it overnight.  To my astonishment, I see this morning that it has updated to version 0.09.11r.  So it seems like that procedure is the key to this puzzle, at least when starting from version 0.07.05r.  Wouldn't it be nice if someone at Telstra knew that!

Anyway, I've noticed a couple of things since the update - the management interface is much snappier and more responsive, and it even seems like internet speed might be a bit better, although that might be my imagination.  And speeds do vary, so it could be just a temporary thing.

So, some progress, but not due to anything Telstra has done. I'm now hopeful that it will be able to do future updates without having to go through this return-to-factory-settings thing.  I have not yet tried going back to using its own wifi (still using a separate wireless AP), but will do so when convenient, to see if access to my Synology box now works.  I will report what I see.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Update to previous post...

I have gone back to using the router's own wireless network, instead of the separate access point I was using to get around the SMB issues.  The situation does seem to have improved - the laptop that could not access our Synology device now can!  It has been doing so for a couple of hours with no interruptions.  So it looks like firmware 0.9.11r  HAS made significant improvements in that area.  My firewall is on, but set to LOW security level.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Glad to hear your modem has updated and SMB is no longer blocked.

Suggest you set the firewall to normal. Both normal and low allow all outgoing connections and block all incoming directions connections from unknown sources. The only difference is when on normal the modem silently blocks the incoming connection without sending any acknowledgement signal back, on low an acknowledgement is sent back so any hacker will know that there is a modem or router at that IP address.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

I set it to Low because it sounded like Normal might interfere with some home automation software I use, which needs to be able to make connections into the local network from the outside world.  Normal says it blocks all "Unknown" incoming connections.  So what constitutes an "unknown" connection", and what is a "known" one?

A known connection is one that a port forwarding rule has been set up for either manually with a port forwarding rule or via UPNP.

Thanks, that makes perfect sense.  I have set it back to Normal, and of course, the home automation software still works fine.  Bit of a brain fade there.....  Thanks.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Another thing has come to my attention.  Ever since I managed to get this router to update to firmware 0.9.11r, we are having occasional internet dropouts.  Every few days, the response from our laptops becomes sporadic, and the router seems to lose and then re-establish its internet connection.  A side-effect of this is that its public IP address changes.  That's not a problem, but it shows that something significant has happened.  We use remote desktop software to do work for clients, so it quite painful if this happens in the middle of a session.

I mention it here because I cannot recall EVER seeing dropouts like this before the update to firmware 0.9.11r.  Has anyone else seen anything like this?  I accept that these could be genuine dropouts due to something further upstream, but I'm just a bit suspicious that we never encountered these in the 8 months or so before the update.  The history of this device does not inspire confidence!

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

The Arcadyan Telstra Smart Modem firewall is blocking NetBIOS traffic on the LAN. This means using the server name to connect to SMB volumes will fail but using the IP address will work.

What type of connection do you have? I am on FTTN and have never noticed any dropouts. Could you post the section of your log for the period just before drop to just after the drop out?

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

This an HFC connection.  I ended up rebooting the router when it happened yesterday, and I'm no longer sure exactly when it happened.  If/when it happens again I will look at the log and post what's there.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

The WAN supervision fail event tends to suggest it is NBN link or Telstra network fault rather than a modem fault. Do any of the lights on the NTD change when the internet is lost?

Didn't look at any of the lights, will next time.  Is the NTD the other device, between the wall outlet and the router?

Yes the NBN NTD is the device between wall socket and Telstra Modem.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

I've just had another interruption, although maybe slightly different this time.  I checked the NTD and all 4 lights were showing green by the time I got there (don't usually work right next to it and the router).  The indicator on the front of the router was orange for a minute or two, then it changed to blue.  So it had done its fallback to the 4G network.  I went back to my laptop and internet was now ok, but only for a minute or two, after which there was a shorter interruption, then back to "normal" service.  When I went to the router's homepage, it had switched from 4G back to the NBN, so I guess that was the second interruption.  Log follows:

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

In both cases the internet has been lost due to the lose of the connection to Telstra's server. There are two main differences.

  1. The previous loss of the connection occurred just after the VOIP had been successfully registered with the VOIP server. The modem checks the VOIP connection every 9 minutes and 40 seconds. In this last loss of connection the loss occurred just before the regular registration test. Because the SIP registration failed the modem keeps trying to register. Because the SIP registration failed the modem has switched to 4 G backup in 2 minutes instead of the 4 minutes in the previous loss of connection.

  2. The previous log covers the time from when connection is lost till time modem switches to 4 G backup. This last log covers the time from when modem lost connect to when it switches back to main NBN link.

It seems to much of a coincidence that these drop outs have occurred just after the modem was updated. Although the logs point to a NBN link or Telstra Network problem It would be interesting to try another router or modem to see if dropouts still occur.

Yes, a bit too much of a coincidence for me too.  I CAN actually try another router, because I still have the one that Telstra sent me.  I did try to return it at a Telstra shop after I managed to coerce my original one to update, but they told me it would be "recycled", and they "couldn't give it to anyone else"!  I could hardly believe that they would turn a perfectly serviceable device (well, relatively speaking for the LH1000) into e-waste, so I kept it.  That one still has firmware 0.07.05r, which means it will have the SMB problem, although I could let it update now that I know how to.  Will think about that one.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

It seems I'm having the same intermittent dropouts issue. It's been about a month and I regularly lose connection for a few seconds every now and then (multiple times a day though).

The log shows multiple

WAN: eth0 BFDv4 Supervision fails once. Fail Count = 1

and

WAN: eth0 BFDv6 Supervision fails once. Fail Count = 1

when it happens.

All lights are green on the router (Arcadyan LH1000) and adapter Arris CM8200 when it happens

Anyone found a solution?

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

I had a similar issue with the SAMBA feature when I connected an external HDD via USB and resolved it by changing settings in Windows 10. I understand older versions of windows and I suspect Apple devices don't have the issue because they support the obsolete version of SBM used by the Telstra supplied NBN device.

Just to be clear my solution identified that the Telstra supplied NBN device is the problem as it uses an obsolete version of SBM and the later versions of Windows 10 have this disabled by default because it's a security issue.

My hardware is described as Product Vendor  Arcadyan, Product Name  LH1000, Boot Version 1.0.38-116.118, Firmware Version 0.10.05r, Hardware Version01

Okay, here's what I did to fix it.

  • Click on Windows Start
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on Apps
  • Click on Related settings - Program and Features to show a new window
  • Click on Turn Windows features on or off to show a new Windows Features window
  • Scroll down the list of features ( alphabetical order) and find SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support
  • Click the checkbox to activate the feature.

Your Windows 10 system should show your storage device soon after. If not you'll need to reboot the computer and maybe the Telstra modem.

Oh, by the way, Telstra's "technical support" both basic and platinum are not competent to resolve even the most basic issues. They have their "scripts" and if the problem is outside of these then you get the "runaround" or the "wall".

Best to avoid them and Telstra all together if possible. Pay the $100 AU to a competent technician to fix it

Good luck!

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

The Arcadyan modem LH1000 with the latest firmware now supports SMB 2.0. By default SMB 1.0 is enabled in the modem. SMB 2.0 can be enabled in the modem's content sharing settings.

cf4, when you say "the latest firmware", is that 0.09.11r?  I have that version but I see nothing in the Content Sharing area of the management pages (DLNA or Samba tabs) that makes any reference to SMB versions.  Or does this only apply to devices directly connected to the LH1000 on a USB port?

Ah, that's interesting.  Do you happen to know when that version was first seen?  If it was very recently then I'll wait a bit, but if it has been around for a while then I might have to return my device to factory settings and leave it overnight again, to coerce it into updating.  Thanks for the info.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

OK thanks.  I had a look at the log in my router, and made the following discoveries:

1. I could see where it did its 2 updates back in February, after I reset it to factory settings and left it overnight.  After February, there is not one occurrence of the word "software" in the log.  So it looks like it isn't even checking if updates are available.  I really thought that once I had updated past the old firmware, it would be able to update itself from then on.  But apparently not.

2. The log is full of what looks like some sort of error. About every 45 minutes, the following sequence appears:

11.04.2020 07:45:54 TR069: Sending 1 BOOT inform to ACS: 2001:8006:3100:2100::1.
11.04.2020 07:45:54 TR069: Inform Fail!!(Invalid URL or ACS unreachable)

11.04.2020 07:45:54 TR069: ACS connection failed with error code 401
11.04.2020 07:45:54 TR069: Account is not existed!!

It repeats over and over again, and is almost the only data in the TR-069 log category for as far as the eye can see.  Any idea what that is all about?  Is it important?  If so, can anything be done about it (by me)?

The next step will be to return it to factory settings and leave it overnight, and see if that coerces it into updating, as it did back in Feb.  But I keep forgetting to do it before I go to bed! Smiley Frustrated

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Something is preventing the modem from communicating with the remote management server. It could be a hiden modem setting that gets set when you restore the back up file. There was another modem the F@st5355 that had this problem. The only way I was to get modem to update was to factory reset and renter all the settings manually. Rather than remove the hidden setting from the backup Telstra as a fix removed the backup function off the modem.in a firmware update.

Lòoks like you will have to do a factory reset and leave the modem on default settings until it is updated.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Yes it does look that way.  I can re-enter my settings, but the problem is that in the management interface I cannot enter/modify the details of my fixed line phone which is attached to the router.  The entry and editing controls are either missing or disabled, so it looks like only a Telstra tech can get in there, which is sort of what you might expect.  So the only way I can get those details back into the router is to do a restore of my saved settings - catch 22.  Is that right, or is there a way for me to enter telephony details?  Or does the network somehow know how to associate my router with my phone number, without me doing anything?

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

Further info following from previous post...

Since we all have a bit more spare time than usual these days, I tried resetting the router to factory settings today.  Results were:

1. After it came up, it downloaded and installed the new firmware after only about 10 minutes.  So it is now running on 0.10.05r.  So that's good.

2. I tried restoring my saved settings, and as soon as I did that, the errors reported above started appearing in the log again.  So I reset it to factory settings again, then manually re-entered all my settings changes.  A bit laborious, but got there.  And the errors are now NOT appearing in the log, so maybe it will take the next firmware update all by itself.  That's not so good, but at least I know what's happening now.

3. I discovered that my fixed-line phone details persisted over the factory reset, so there is no need for any re-entry.  So either that data is stored somewhere separate from the other settings, or the network somehow knows which phone number is on which router or NBN connection, or whatever.  However it works, that's good too.

4. I also discovered that I could not do the factory reset through the web interface. The buttons are still there, and it pops up the confirmation dialog box, but when I click Yes, it shows the progress bar up to 1%, then drops back to the home page and nothing more happens.  I could only do it via the switch on the back, with a straightened paperclip.

Is there any information on the changes in this revision, i.e.what has been fixed and/or changed?  I can confirm that the router still cannot do NAT Loopback, so that's still on the to-do list, I hope.  That's about the only thing that is annoying me now.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

You will probably find that if you back up your settings and now restore the settings the TR-069 errors will no longer occur. This is because the hidden setting that prevented the TR-069 is not in the new backup.

The main  fixes that I can see are.

  1. SMB 2 support.
  2. Maximum number off port forwarding rules increases to more than 10.

OK thanks.  I did save my settings after re-entering them, and noted that the file was somewhat smaller than the old one, so I was hoping that future restores might be more useful.  The update is progress I guess, but it could be a bit faster!

I don't know how often modem checks. I don't think it checks every day. If you are still seeing TRS-069 events and there are no failed to connect or account unknown errors then remote management is still working as it should.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

The SMB 2.0 implementation was the problem for me, not the firewall.  Once I disabled SMB 2.0 and went back to 1.0, everything worked.

By comparison, disabling the firewall did nothing at all for me.

Hmm ok.  Since you mention the wifi booster, my device's log contains hundreds of entries like this:

What's that about?  Is it re-connecting all my devices or something?  If so, why?

And another thing I see in large numbers in the log is what appears to be registering the VOIP phone number, like this:

15.05.2020 08:01:03 [VoIP] SIP Registered: IP-Address: 2001:8003:0F00:9204:9977:3D8D:8110:BB04, VoIP number: +61xxxxxxxx, URI[sip:[2001:8006:3521:0001:0007:E1C0:0000:0011]:5060;transport=udp].

This seems to happen about every 10 minutes, all the time, hundreds and hundreds of them.  Is this normal?  It seems to be awfully busy doing nothing!

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

The VOIP events are normal.T VOIP SIP checks the connection to the VOIP server about every 10 minutes.

The WiFi booster connection event do show the connection of WiFi devices to modem. It depends how often they are occurring wether it is normal. Strange that there are all connections are for 2.4 GHz WiFi.

Re: Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 ( ARCADYAN) blocking SMB

As stated below after a period of time has elapsed the firewall is re enabled and the problem returns.

I contacted Telstra Platinum Support (see below/attached) and they are yet to follow up.

This needs to be addressed.

Telstra Smart Modem

Plug in and connect in minutes. Smart.
