Wemo switch doesn't work with Telstra smart modem

My wemo wifi switch worked perfectly with the Gateway max but no longer works with a Telstra smart modem which I got last week. I've reset the switch to factory settings, I've reloaded the wemo app, even moved the switch to the same room as the modem. It does seem like a common problem. I'm fairly certain is a setting on the modem but have no idea which one.

Has anyone with a smart modem and wemo switch had any success, if so how did you do it?

Try turning off Band Steering in the modem (will split the 2.4 & 5GHz signals into their own networks) and then set up the wifi connection on the Wemo again.
Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
