Connecting to a more distant tower

Answered

On 4-12-2013 at 8.13am I was at Northgate in Brisbane and my iPhone 3GS using a 2G SIM  connected to a tower at Pinkenba, maybe 3 or 4 km away.Calls before and after show it connecting to a closer tower. How is this possible and is it common?

Re: Connecting to a more distant tower

Hi BrisbaneAI,

When the tower close to you is overloaded it will push you onto another tower so you can still use the service.

Re: Connecting to a more distant tower

Thanks Matt W,

So you don't think that the distance of 3km or so would make it unsual at all?

Is there any info re. this.

Re: Connecting to a more distant tower

Not at all. With clear line of sight you can easily connect to towers several kms away and, as mentioned by Matt, the network manages capacity by pushing traffic between towers. This allows us to spread the load and ensure that as many customers as possible maintain access to the network.
