Yes. It is activated by any phone network activity (data/calls/messages).

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.

My experience they will use absolutely any traffic to claim the day has started. Even if I am using wifi that counts

Wifi use should not trigger the daypass unless you haven't turned off mobile data (as the phone will still send small amounts of data over the mobile network).
