Prepaid number deactivated

I tried to recharge my prepaid telstra mobile number online today. but the system said it was deactivated (as I had not recharged for a long while). Even though I am still able to call my number (the mobile rings and the number is still "activated" ) I called Telstra immediately and was told I can no longer have the number, and that it would be quarantined today? and that I would have to wait 6 months until I could recover it?

 

As it is still activated as of now, why can't just buy another prepaid starter kit and have the number moved onto it?

Once a number is has been deactivated, we cannot retrieve it from quarantine regrettably.
