I have a telstra $30 prepaid which is valid for 28 days,if I recharge a couple of days before the 28 days expires do I lose that couple of days or does the new recharge start at the end of the previous 28 days

The new recharge starts the day that you buy it, so you "lose" the couple of days.
You can set up an automatic recharge. That will recharge on the same day each month and will cover you for the month rather than the 28 days.
Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
