I have just received my Apple Pencil and a new iPad Pro but the Apple Pencil does not magnetically attach to my ipad what am I doing wrong

Is it a combination of
Apple Pencil (2nd generation) for
12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd generation)
and 11-inch iPad Pro
The 1st Generation Pencil which is for other iPads, doesn't attach magnetically.
Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.
