How far away from Telstra air have I got to be to use

You've got to be in range of a hotspot. The maximum distance that you can be away from it will vary depending on the type. If it is a Payphone type out in the street about 30-50m is the range that the one near me works on. If it is inside someone's house, then it could be as close as inside the house or on the footpath. It varies a lot.
Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.

Average they say is approx. 20metres - not very big range.
