Can't send emails

I now cannot send emails. Keep getting "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.bigpond.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again."

WHY WAS IT LOST??

Do I have to setup my account again? - without interfering with my emails of course.

I am using port 587. 25 won't work either. I use POP (not IMAP).

25 used to work until I upgraded my OS and was given a later version of Thunderbird (52.2.1).

Telstra (BigPond) say they don't deal with Thunderbird. BUT IT SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE EMAIL CLIENT (SHOULD IT)?

THE FACT IS THAT BIGPOND SEEMS TO BE BLOCKING MY ATTEMPTS TO SEND EMAILS.

Can anyone help please?

Was this helpful?

  • Yes it was, thank you
  • No, I still need help

Re: Can't send emails

try changing outgoing to:

smtp.telstra.com

port: 465

encryption:TLS

authentication: password

POP or IMAP protocol makes no difference, outgoing settings use SMTP protocol

Re: Can't send emails

Thanks Yastiandrie >> I only had 'SSL/TLS' and 'Normal password' as options. I set smtp.telstra.com as default.

On attemting to send I got the message 'Status: Connected to mail.bigpond.com' for about 15 seconds.

Then the error message >>

'Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.bigpond.com timed out. Try again.'

So it doesn't work!

I suspect a fault in the new Thunderbird. But do you have any other ideas please?

Re: Can't send emails

Still seems to be defaulting to mail.bigpond.com . Try moving your messages out of the outbox to another folder (draftsfor example), making sure mail.bigpond.com is no longer an outgoing server hostname anywhere, then trying to resend

Re: Can't send emails

I am assuming that Thunderbird 52.2 is faulty.

I just instantly sent a test email to a friend using Thunderbird 45.8 without any problem at all. (I keep my old OS on a partition, which will be overwritten by the NEXT version of the OS : Mageia 7.)

When I first used T52.2 I was asked if I wanted Lightning (a calendar/diary I believe) and I said yes. I saw on the internat that it could cause problems so I uninstalled it, without the desired result (an ability to send emails!).

I will wait to see if any susequent version of Thunderbird is produced. I suppose I could remove T and try a reinstall......
