Cannot receive Bigpond (POP) emails on Mac Mail/Big Sur

Hi,

I cannot get this issue resolved from the call centre or using the online tools.

I have a Bigpond POP email account. I am using Mac Mail.

The account is working fine on my phone and on telstra webmail.

On my MacBook I can send emails, but not receive them.

The latest error message  is:

There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “Bigpond” or try again. The server returned the error: Connections to the server “imap.telstra.com” on the default ports timed out.

I've concluded that the Incoming mail server settings (POP) on my computer are wrong. They keep defaulting to IMAP settings. I have tried all the published settings for both POP and IMAP, none work.

Should I have an IMAP mail account? Any advice on what exactly I should be asking Telstra for?

Thanks!!

Re: Cannot receive Bigpond (POP) emails on Mac Mail/Big Sur

IMAP does work better and it allows you to keep your devices synchronised.

There is no such thing as a POP or IMAP account, they are just protocols. Just set the connection up in Mac Mail as an IMAP connection.

Account type: IMAP

Incoming server details:

Incoming server address: imap.telstra.com
Incoming server port: 993
Encrypted connection: SSL

Outgoing server details:

Outgoing server address: smtp.telstra.com
Outgoing server port: 465 (recommended) or 587
SMTP authentication: On
Encrypted connection: SSL/TLS on port 465 (recommended) or STARTTLS on port 587

Username & Password:

User name: Your Telstra email address - ending in ‘@bigpond.com’, ‘@bigpond.net.au’ or ‘@telstra.com.’
Password: Your Telstra email account password - REMEMBER it’s case sensitive.

Other settings to check:

Make sure ‘Outgoing server requires authentication’ is ticked.

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.

Thanks for this Jupiter. The incoming mail (still POP protocols) was restored overnight - but not because of any changes I made!
