Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Answered

My bigpond.com email account has just been transferred to the new Telstra Mail (from Outlook.com).

Following Telstra manual instructions (automatic update link didn't work), I now have emails correctly synced to Outlook client via a new IMAP account on my 3 Windows PCs.

Bigpond.com Calendars and Contacts do not sync on any of them.

All PCs are running the latest Windows 10.

Two PCs are running Office/Outlook 2010 (previously synced perfectly using Hotmail Connector/MAPI), one running Office 2013 (previously synced perfectly via Exchange ActiveSync).

How do I sync Telstra Mail contacts and calendars properly with MS Office Outlook client?

(sync to Apple iPhone,iPad works fine for mail/calender/contacts)

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

All that is ceasing is the mail function within Outlook.com, contacts and calendars will still continue within Outlook.com

You just need to configure two accounts within your Outlook client (eg Outlook 2010), one pointing to Outlook.com, the other pointing to Telstra.com.

Configure the Outlook.com account within Outlook 2010 to use Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector (just like you were running before this all started). In Outlook 2010: Add New account/update account - [choice 3] Manually configure server settings or additional server types - [choice 4] Other server type Microsoft Outlook Hotmail Connector; provide name; email address and password

Configure the Telstra.com account within Outlook 2010 to use e-mail account standard settings. In Outlook 2010: Add New account - [choice 1] E-mail account, provide name; email address and password, and it should autoconfigure.

You will then have two accounts showing within Outlook 2010. The Telstra.com account will show both historical and new emails, but no contacts or calendar. The Outlook.com will show historical emails as well as live contacts and calendar. You may want to physically delete the historical emails off Outlook.com, because you have them as well on Telstra.com and it is confusing to the user to have the same data appearing twice.

Works for me quite nicely.

Additionally, I have configured my iPhone and iPad to pick up email, contacts and calendar. The key is to remember where the live data is now and configure your desktop client/iDevice accordingly.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

I'm a different Mark, but having the identical issue.

I am using Outlook CalDav Synchronizer https://sourceforge.net/projects/outlookcaldavsynchronizer/

(Part of) the issue is that calendar.telstra.com is not a complete URI. If I try calendar.telstra.com only I get the following error and cannot even exit the settings page:

The CalDav/CardDav Url has to end with a slash ('/')

The CalDav/CardDav Url is not a well formed Url. (Invalid URI: The format of the URI could not be determined).

Adding the slash to the end fixes the first error but the second error remains unchanged.

I assume that iOS devices assume a specific scheme and / or port and automatically add that to the URI to work, but I have not been able to guess the correct scheme / port combination.

I first tried to make a full URI using both http:// and https://. Both URI's immediately return 404 not found errors. I assume these default to ports 80 and 443 respectively. So I tried adding the port number and got the exact same response so I assume they are blocked.

I then also tried (without succcess) ports 8080, 8008, 8800 and 8443.

I believe (after searching for info on how Apple iOS devices handle this) that the correct URI (for CalDav) should be https://calendar.telstra.com:8443/ for a secure connection (http://calendar.telstra.com:8008/ for an insecure connection) but neither work for me.

I believe CardDav would be https://contacts.telstra.com:8443/ for a secure connection (http://contacts.telstra.com:8800/ for an insecure connection).

The main error message I get is:

CalDavSynchronizer.DataAccess.WebDavClientException: An error occurred while sending the request. ---> System.Net.Http.HttpRequestException: An error occurred while sending the request. ---> System.Net.WebException: Unable to connect to the remote server ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 203.36.172.107:8443

My guess at this stage is that the ports numbers I am trying are incorrect. Perhaps connecting to ports 80 / 443 is supposed to initiate a redirect to something other than 8008, 8800 and 8443 and Outlook CalDav Synchronizer is not following the redirects?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Pat,

I have successulyy used 'Outlook CalDav Synchronizer' on my Windows 10 Outlook 2016 Surface Book. My Calendars and Contacts are synchronising with my iPhone, Tesltra Webmail & Outlook 2016 seamlessly.

The new release 2.5.1 of 'Outlook CalDav Synchroniser 'supports Telstra Autodiscovery URLs. ... if you know what to enter.

I am unaware of the Windows Store app so I don't know if the following URLs are applicable.

Mark1724 got the ball rolling for the URLs...

The Autodiscovery URLs I use are:

For contacts I am using these settings:

DAV URL: https://contacts.telstra.com/carddav/addressbooks/your-user-id@bigpond.com/main/

Username: your-user-id@bigpond.com

Password: your-password

For calendar use these settings:

DAV URL: https://calendar.telstra.com/calendars/your-user-id@bigpond.com/main/

Username: your-user-id@bigpond.com

Password: your-password

* Note - I need to check the Calendar URL on my PC ... don't have with me at the moment.

The Synchroniser has a separate 'profile' for calendar and contact. Make sure you specify '2-way' sync... otherwise things go missing.

Many thanks to Alexander Nimmervoll for quickly updating the Synchroniser to support Telstra Autodiscovery URLS.

Tony.

IMAP protocol only syncs emails, telstra's mail system is not EAS/MAPI based which can sync contacts and calendars. Best bet would be to use icloud or similiar which you can install on your PC's and use it to sync contacts/calendar's

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Thanks for the suggestion.

While I have been able to get some connectivity this way, it seems very clunky still. I see there are various connectors that sync to Outlook via Caldav and carddav. Telstra mail uses this to sync to iPhone etc. is it possible to sync this servers to Outlook this way?

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

I have the same problem as you.

I think this is an unsolvable isssue, because Outlook desktop client simply doesn't have the capability to use the CalDAV protocol that Telstra.com employs.

See https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/email/telstra-mail/new-telstra-mail-and-exchange-active-...

I have worked around this issue by leaving my Calendar and Contacts on Outlook.com, and accessing that data as if the Telstra Mail move had never happened. Works fine.

(As a side issue, whilst Telstra successfully transferred my emails and contacts from Outlook.com to Telstra.com, they totally failed transfer my calendar data.  But seeing as I won't be using calendar on Telstra.com anyway, I can't be bothered to raise the matter with them. Life is too short)

Love to keep working off outlook.com

But I think that the @bigpond.com address is now pointing to Telstra Mail - so the Outlook.com account is no longer updating (will eventually be deleted), and cant be synced with MS Outlook anymore.

Agree - life IS too short for all this ****!

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

For clarity in my post above, the two accounts that you configure within your Outlook client (eg Outlook 2010), will have the same username, i.e. yourname@bigpond.com

(yourname@bigpond.com already exists in both Outlook.com and Telstra.com)

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Thanks for the clear instructions SH2071.

I have now set this up on a Windows10 PC +Outlook 2010.

Apears to be working well as you described.

This is a good solution, and I have marked it.

Only (relatively minor) issue may be to be careful of the 2 active accounts with addresses and calendars. We can ignore the Telstra Mail Caledars and Contacts, but Telstra Mail may still update them.

eg 1: receive a meeting invitation via the Telstra Mail account, and then "accept", I assume the meeting will update the Telstra Calendar (which cant be seen on MS Outlook), and not the Outllok.com Calendar. Same if saving a contact from incoming.

eg 2: Apple iPhone etc can pick up the new Telstra Mail/contacts via the seperate CalDAV etc accounts. I can kill this and add the Outlook.com account, but same point as MS Outlook.

May be workarounds, but at worst, I can live with keeping an eye on this.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

I have a Surface Book Pro with Windows 10 & Outlook 2016. As of last week when my Telstra Email was converted to 'new Email' I cannot get my calendar and contact entries to sync with my PC.

Webmail access is fine, iPhone connectivity using IMAP, CardDav & CalDav works fine. If I enter a contact or calendar item via the Web interface it Syncs with the iPhone but not the PC.

On my PC I have created a separate PST for the Contacts and Calendar but no luck in Syncing these entries.

The Emails Sync fine.

This is a real pain. I recently changed Email addresses from a bigpond.net.au address because it was POP only and did not sync.

What is missing? Or this just a loss of functionality that Telstra has not announced?

Hi

I've tried to setup the 2 account solution as suggested, but am still having issues. For clarity I had already migrated my mail account to telstra mail after being advised to do so, and so will need to recreate the outlook.com account ... but think I must have the server settings incorrect.

Are you able to advise the server settings for the outlook.com account to be able to sync calendar and contacts

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Hi Duncan,

You will need to refer to Microsoft for support on how to do this. A quick google brings me this page;

https://blogs.office.com/2012/11/15/put-the-power-of-outlook-2013-behind-your-outlook-com-email/

Do not use the outlook settings on the Telstra.com webpage as those settings will only work for Telstra customers who have not yet been migrated and are on the Microsoft platform.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

I don't believe that Outlook 2016 supports CardDav and CalDav directly, you need to install a synchroniser add-in ( or use the two account approach described above where your calendar and contacts remain on outlook.com)

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

I have tried 2 Outlook Add-in Synchronizers but failed. They provide a Carddav & Caldav functions missing in Outlook 2016.

Unfortunately they require a URL that is not documented. The 'calendar.telstra.com' & 'contacts.telstra.com' entries do not work.

Does anyone know the correct URL to use with these packages.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Can this proposed solution please be verified officially by Telstra?

Specifically - that the Outlook.com accounts (using the Bigpond login id / password details) will continue for the forseeable future (and not less than 2 years after migration of email to the Telstra mail system). And that if / when the Outlook.com accounts are finally disabled that any calendar / contact changes will be merged into the Telstra mail contacts / calendars at that time.

I ask because I find it very hard to believe that Telstra will continue to pay Microsoft indefinitely to maintain the Outlook.com accounts.

It would seem much more likely that Telstra will keep their agreement and account with Microsoft for a short period of time past the last customer being migrated then - once they are satisfied that the migration is "completed" - the Outlook.com accounts will all be simultaneously disabled / turned off.

At that time my concern would be that all calendar / contact data in Outlook.com post migration will be lost without notice - as I doubt that Telstra will redo the calendar / contact migration (after all it will be much more difficult to merge two datasets than simply copy the outlook.com one over the top of a blank telstra.com one as has happened this time).

I also note that this thread is being linked to by a number of other similar threads on this forum as the accepted solution so there may be an increasing number of people relying on the proposed answer being correct.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Outlook.com uses EAS to do synchronise the Calendar and Contact and is the property of Microsoft. Telstra Mail uses CardDAV & CalDAV protocols which is used Gmail works with a variety of other mail programs.

All accounts that were migrated from Outlook.com can still use Outlook.com for contacts and calendar, while using Telstra Mail for the email server. The only function that the Outlook.com mailbox cannot perform is receiving emails after the migration.

Alternatively, users may prefer to download a plugin (add-in) for MS Outlook to work with CardDAV & CalDAV protocols so that they can utilise the Telstra Mail calendar and contacts instead. There are several options available for this and a web search for CalDAV and the version of Outlook that you are running should provide you with several options.

The following information is from: https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/email/telstra-mail/set-up-telstra-mail-on-your-device

Sync email contacts and calendar on your device

To sync your Telstra Mail contacts and calendar on your Apple device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac), we recommend using the settings CardDAV (contacts) and CalDAV (calendar). This will allow you to add, edit and remove contacts, plus calendar events, from your device and keep them in sync everywhere you use them.

Android does not use CalDAV/CardDAV however apps are available from the Google Play Store that will allow you to synchronise your contacts and calendar to your Android device.

Note: Microsoft contacts will be copied over to Telstra Mail and can be accessed using Telstra Mail via your browser.

To set up CardDAV and/or CalDAV on your Apple device

  1. Open device Settings
  2. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Select Add Account, then Other
  • For contacts: Select Add CardDAV Account
  • For calendar: Select Add CalDAV Account

CardDAV and CalDAV settings

Server

  • For contacts (CardDAV) enter: contacts.telstra.com
  • For calendar (CalDAV) enter: calendar.telstra.com

Username: Enter your full email address (ending in '@bigpond.com' or '@bigpond.net.au' or @telstra.com)

Password: Enter your Telstra email account password, which will be case-sensitive.

Description: This can be anything you like, e.g. My CalDAV Account

Another option is to export the Outlook.com calendar using .ics. I found that this link which provides information to how to do this.

@Mark1724 - I am unable to confirm if the outlook.com will remain available indefinitely after the migration has been completed.

- Shelly

Edited to provide more detail and links to explain EAS & CardDAV/CalDAV

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Hi @Shellock thanks for the info.

re: "The only function that the Outlook.com mailbox cannot perform is receiving emails after the migration."

As I understand it outlook.com can continue to receive emails post migration provided you use the format bigpond_user_id@outlook.com rather than bigpond_user_id@bigpond.com - provided you have added bigpond_user_id@outlook.com as an alias to your outlook.com account. Essentially (at least immediately post migration) it is a whole, fully functional account so everything still works. It is just that the MX records for bigpond.com now point to a different set of servers so email addressed to bigpond.com is no longer forwarded to outlook.com servers.

re: the CalDav / CardDav setup information. Thankyou for this. I am having difficulty with the URI's provided (calendar.telstra.com / contacts.telstra.com) as they are not fully formed URI's but am happy to keep working through that on a seperate thread.

re: "I am unable to confirm if the outlook.com will remain available indefinitely after the migration has been completed."

This in my opinion is the crux of the various workarounds proposed. If the outlook.com accounts are suspended then to a large extent the workarounds will fail. I feel that we should be able to get a definitive answer on what is going to happen to these accounts. Will they be closed? if yes, when? Or will they continue under whatever Microsoft terms of service apply.

I'm refraining from purchasing any CAL/CARDDAV plug-in unless there's evidence this works "seemlessly". I understand the outlook.com solution mentioned earlier, but that is not lean.

One positive from the move to the new Telstra Email platform, and some people have failed to point out is that the send/receive and email sync is lighting fast now, and I don't appear to get those annoying IMAP server timeout messages anymore!

So well done on one front, but still some work to resolve re syncing items other than email!

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

After 4 seperate phone calls to the regular techs at Telstra in the Phillipines, I was told that the problem was beyond them and I would have to pay for Telstra Platinum to fix my problem.  The problem was caused by Telstra moving me to Telstra mail.  didnt have the problem for the previous 10-15 years.  After much arguing I managed to speak to a Platinum tech free of charge, he sorted 3 other Telstra Mail change over problems in a jiffy, but admitted that Telstra were as yet unable to sort out the syncing problem.  they have several techs working on the problem and when they sort it my problem will be automatically sorted.  This is great as it is taking 3,4 or 5 hours for me emails to come through and it is very hard to work from a phone screen (which receives the emails immediately)  They are ruining my business because of this.  Why did they not ensure all aspects of Telstra Mail were working perfectly before changing us over???????  why are Telstra not held accountable for this stress.  Although the Platinum tech partially helped that was 1. hour and 50 minutes that I will never get back into my life and now will have to work until 8pm tonight to get my job done.

Hi Mark,

Within webmail you will need to select the share icon next to the calendar that you are wanting to share. To see this icon you will need to hover your mouse over the calendar.  You will then be able add an email address to share the calendar with. This will email a link to you that can be added to Outlook, Apple iCal, mobile devices and other applications.

Alternatively, if you select Allow anyone to subscribe to a view-only version of your calendar it will provide a link such as http://calendar.telstra.com:5229/calendars/username@bigpond.com/11234123@XsRwQpNtpFntjK

You can also find the steps to share your calendar in this FAQ

Let me know how you go.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

I am still waiting for the URLs to become available...

Considering leaving Bigpond.

This is a deal-breaker for me.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Please see the response from Alexander Nimmervoli - developer of Outlook CalDav Synchronizer

I asked Alexander to look into the URLs as the Autodiscovery was not working. I believe that on your iPhone when you specify 'contacts.telstra.com' it initiates an 'autodiscovery' of the detailed URL. Why Telstra cannot tells the detailed URL I don't know.

I will attempt Outlook CalDav Synchronizer later today for the Contacts.

Alexander Nimmervoll - 12 hours ago

Thank you.

For contacts the url looks like
https://contacts.telstra.com/carddav/addressbooks/<email>/main/

Autodiscovery doesn't work because the server sends 307 for redirect and we only check for 302.
Will fix that for the next release, then https://calendar.telstra.com should discover the calendar
which is https://calendar.telstra.com/calendars<somerandomstring>/
for your test account

For Outlook CalDav Synchronizer it seems to be work in progress - but at least progress.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Ops.. Jumped too soon.

.

The specific URLs for each user's calendar & Contacts very long and obscure.

Need to wait for next release of Outlook CalDav Synchronizer with the fix for URL Autodiscovery

I will post when I get it.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Hi @TT60

Thank you very much for posting the info that you have found. Based on your lead I believe I now have both calendar CalDav and contact CardDav sync working using Outlook CalDav Synchronizer https://sourceforge.net/projects/outlookcaldavsynchronizer/

For contacts I am using these settings:

DAV URL: https://contacts.telstra.com/carddav/addressbooks/your-user-id@bigpond.com/main/

Username: your-user-id@bigpond.com

Password: your-password

For calendar it is a bit more complicated as you need to find the random string that is used for your calendar:

- Go to https://email.telstra.com/webmail/ and login to the webmail client using your normal login details.

- Click on Calendar to go to the calendar view.

- If you hover the mouse cursor over the words 'Main Calendar' listed under My Calendars on the top left hand side of screen two icons will appear to the right of the words 'Main Calendar'. An edit icon being a pencil in a circle and a share icon being 3 dots connected by 2 lines. Click on the share icon (Share This Calendar).

- Add an email address that you have access to but is not your bigpond email address that you are logged into (the system wont let you share the calendar with yourself). Leave it set as view only and click on the plus symbol to add the email address to the Calendar Sharing List. Then click Save.

- Go to the email of the alternative email address you used above. You will get an email from your main bigpond email with a link in it that will look something like this: http://calendar.telstra.com:5229/calendars/your-user-id@bigpond.com/some-random-string

- Go back into your webmail calendar, click on the Share This Calendar icon and click the minus symbol next to the alternative email address to remove the sharing. Then click Save.

This gives enough information for the URL. For calendar use these settings:

DAV URL: https://calendar.telstra.com/calendars/your-user-id@bigpond.com/some-random-string/

Username: your-user-id@bigpond.com

Password: your-password

Note - double check the http versus https part, check to add the slash character after the random string, and check that if you copy and paste the string from the email it may include some white space characters at the end make sure to delete them off. And dont include a port number either.

I have only just got it working myself but so far I was able to synchronise both contacts and calendar from webmail to Outlook and from Outlook to webmail.

Not a particularly straight forward process but working is better than not working.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:

Please make sure to remember to unshare your calendar after you have got the random string. With that string, the email address and sharing enabled I was able to both VIEW AND MODIFY the calendar without authorisation - EVEN IF THE SHARING WAS SET TO VIEW ONLY. There is a massive security bug there somewhere. Making sure that no sharing was enabled seemed to prevent it (disclaimer - I only tested briefly so dont take my word for it).

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Mark,

Well done. I wasn't sure how to get the random string - or if it changed with any frequency.

I will attempt this when I get home.

Do you have your Outlook Contacts & Calendar in a separate PST file or collected in the OST?

Regards,

Tony.

Shelly

Are you able to tell me:

WHAT VERSION OF DAV is Telstra using?

There are Apps for calDAV and cardDAV in the Windows 10 Store but Telstra do not provide an appropriate URLs.

calendar.telstra.com     AND

contacts.telstra.com     DO NOT WORK.

Tony.

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Thanks for the URL information, Tony. This was the missing piece.

I have now also successfully got the sync working using the 'Outlook CalDav Synchronizer'  add-in.

In my case, 3 pc's running Windows 10: 2 with Outlook 2010, and 1 Outlook 2013. All now working with Calendar and Contacts.

A small tip: the Outlook Caldav Synchronizer will ask for the Outlook Folder to sync files to. Can't do this in the Telstra Mail Folder (being IMAP).

A good solution is to first create a new .pst file. ( in File>Account Settings>Data files>add). The add-in will then be able to select that one.

As you say - need to create a sync profile once for Calendar and once for Contacts. (so for me 3x2 = 6 profiles).  All works well.

This is a much superior solultion to the dual account, and other approaches discussed so far, and basically solves the problem  (pity Telstra didn't tell us how to do it).

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

Congratulations and thanks TT60 and Mark1724 for getting the Outlook Synchroniser to work.

100% agree with previous comments that this is a better solution than the dual account approach that I have been using since July. Have now switched over to the synchroniser and no longer use outlook.com to store my calendar and contacts data.

Had a slight struggle getting the correct calendar string to work, notwithstanding Mark1724’s excellent instructions above.

The email link that I got was similar to this (my exact data has been changed):

.....email.telstra.com/webmail/http/shareCalendarxcalid=http%43B%2G%2Fpzaha120vip%3B8754%2Fcalendars%2Fmyusername%40bigpond.com%2F456781475430%40XsTvQpMoBZH&ownername=myusername%40bigpond.com&name=Main+Calendar

The string that you need starts after the    “myusername%40bigpond.com%2F”  and ends before the “&ownername”

Re: Cannot sync new Telstra Mail calendar and contacts with MS Outlook

http://www.akruto.com/ - is THE ONLY way to get Calendars to sync and its a workaround.  They'll do the set-up remotely or Telstra Platinum Support did for me.

All very frustrating....
