Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

Answered

We have an auxillary mail account set up, which was on the live.com server. Up until day before yesterday it was working fine to download mail to the mobile phone, and via Windows LiveMail. Mail has since stopped coming in, though mail can still be sent out.

After some messing around I tried using "pop.telstra.com" to collect the mail instead of "pop3.live.com" and that actually worked on LiveMail. Still cannot get it to work on the mobile, which was using "blu406-m.hotmail.com", presumably set through auto-detect settings when the account was entered into the phone.

So, two questions:

What settings do we now use in the mobile app to collect mail?

Why were the mail servers changed without notification to people using them?

Thanks,

Geoff

So you are saying it works on your PC but not your phone?

Have you tried deleting the account and adding it again?

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

They would have sent you an email saying Telstra Mail is coming

Here are the new settings

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

Looking through the emails that have just downloaded to LiveMail I can see one from Telstra informing us that we have been migrated to TelstraMail(tm). Great idea sending a notification email to an account that wont be able to be collected due to the migration...

I have followed the instructions for setting up a device available at https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/email/telstra-mail/set-up-telstra-mail-on-your-device#an... and these settings (imap.telstra.com on port 993) don't work...

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

Thanks Glenn, funny, the email went to the account we couldn't collect due to the changed settings... and as noted below, the new settings don't work on an Android device.

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

You were correct with pop.telstra.com

They have stuffed up the documentation and the whole change over.

Incoming server details

Server address: pop.telstra.com
Port 995
Encrypted connection: SSL

There is also a 404 for https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/email/telstra-mail/set-up/set-up-telstra-mail-on-your-de... which is linked from the troubleshooting section under support for setting devices up...

I have told a mod, that's all we can do, but look at the settings I have given

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

Thanks Glenn, pop.telstra.com:995 works for LiveMail, but not on Android, nor does imap.telstra.com:993 which the docs state should be used for mobile devices of that flavour.

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

Hi Glenn,

We hadn't tried that, seems odd that deleting and recreating an account would be fundamentally different than changing the appropriate server settings, but for some reason it is, and it worked. Must be details in there that aren't exposed to mere mortals for alteration.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

Because, based on the server settings you said were originally on the phone, it looks like the account was setup as EAS(Exchange), not POP or IMAP. After an email account has been setup, you cannot change the technology type it uses. Unfortunately telstra mail cannot be setup as an EAS account.

You were okay on the computer as it was already setup as POP and you just replaced it with the new POP settings. If you wanted to change to IMAP you would of had to readd the account again on your computer. Had the account been on the phone as POP or IMAP, just replacing the settings would of worked as well

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

@GeoffroC where did you get that link from that went 404? The correct link is https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/email/telstra-mail/set-up-telstra-mail-on-your-device

The one you have has an extra /set-up/ in the middle for some reason and our web admins aren't sure where the incorrect URL was used.

Re: Changes To Bigpond/Live Mail Servers?

Hi DanK,

The links are on https://www.telstra.com.au/support/category/email/telstra-mail/email-issues-since-moving-to-telstra-... Under the heading "Can’t send or receive emails on your mobile device or tablet" there are links to three different device classes just under the text "Make sure you are using the latest email settings for iPhone or Android Telstra Mail" All of these links point to the same place which gives a 404.

Cheers,

Geoff
