email been hacked

My accountant sent me an email which I did not receive. The accountant received a reply back from my email account with directions to deposit a large sum of money in to a bank account which they supplied bsb and acc number and my name using my middle name not my first name.

Lucky for me the accountant phoned me to ask why I had changed the account details.

I have been receiving all other emails since this happened.

How did they hack into my email or did they intercept the accountant email

Thank you

Re: email been hacked

I would suspect that they've hacked the accountant's emails. Hacking yours would be pot luck on the chances of any sort of return. Hacking the accountant gives them all sorts of details about their clients, greatly increasing the chances of obtaining funds/property.

Never be afraid to back yourself when trying new things, just always make sure you have 3 escape routes if things go wrong.

Re: email been hacked

That has been my suspicion as well. I contacted the bank about the bsb and acc number they gave and it is a genuine account, but of course they could not give me details It has been suggested that I report as an attempted fraud to police.
